Beyond Cloud Computing: ERP Helps to Land Curiosity Rover on Mars

SYSPRO, a devoper of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software for on-premise and cloud-based utilization, announced today that Windings, a manufacturer of custom electric motor and generator components and a user of SYSPRO ERP since 1998, is the producer of a key component of the sky crane’s braking system that safely lowered Curiosity to the Red Planet for the rover’s explanatory journey of the Mars landscape.

While smaller rovers of past Mars mission have utilized airbag landing systems, the size of Curiosity necessitated the utilization of a special landing system to provide a soft landing for the huge vehicle.

According to Windings President and CEO Jerry Kauffman, this was not the first time that a Windings-built component has been instrumental in assisting in the exploration of planets, as well as the earth’s nearest neighbor, the moon. However, he did indicate that the Curiosity mission is the first time a Windings component has been utilized in the braking system of a device to safely land a large, mobile instrument package on the surface of a planet.

Windings, which is based in New Ulm, MN, has utilized SYSPRO Enterprise Resource Planning software since 1998. Prior to that time, Windings had been utilizing an IBM System 36, which lacked the flexibility to deal with the mixed-mode manufacturing operations utilized by Windings to produce both standard and custom electromagnetic motors, generators and sub-assemblies for numerous industrial uses, including factory automation, renewable energy, automotive, medical, defense and aerospace.

Big Data Security for Apache Hadoop

Big Data takes center stage today at the Strata Conference & Hadoop World in New York, the world’s largest gathering of the Apache Hadoop™ community. A key conversation topic will be how organizations can improve data security for Hadoop and the applications that run on the platform. As you know, Hadoop and similar data stores hold a lot of promise for organizations to finally gain some value out of the immense amount of data they’re capturing. But HDFS, Hive and other nascent NoSQL technologies were not necessarily designed with comprehensive security in mind. Often what happens as big data projects grow is sensitive data like HIPAA data, PII and financial records get captured and stored. It’s important this data remains secure at rest.
I polled my fellow co-workers at Gazzang last week, and asked them to come up with a top ten list for securing Apache Hadoop. Here’s what they delivered. Enjoy:

Cloud Computing: MapR Takes a Run at Taming HBase

MapR Technologies worked for months to make the elephantine curmudgeon known as Hadoop less snappy and irascible.
It dragged it out of the elephant house, scrubbed its hands and face, gave it some manners, told it which fork to use, slicked down its hair, polished its shoes and sent it out to live in civil society.
Then, beguiled by the fact that 45% of Hadoop shops also use HBase, it turned its hand to taming the equally irritable and hard-to-manage database that lets people run NoSQL queries against Hadoop data. This week it put its civilizing influence into public beta. It calls the widgetry M7.
MapR says it’s given HBase enterprise-grade reliability and performance and put Hadoop and NoSQL capabilities together on the same platform capable of Big Data operations ranging from batch analytics to real-time analytics.

Now Available: Parallels Plesk Automation with Free Unlimited Support

As you consider the next steps in growing your hosting business, Parallels recommends to start centralizing your mail and spam management, and consider offering both Linux and Windows web hosting from the same integrated hosting system.  Our new Parallels Plesk Automation enables you to do all of this from a central management node/administrative control panel with easier updating. Because this server architecture separates your automation and panel from your hosting nodes, Parallels Plesk Automation delivers superior security and uptime.

Parallels understands that fast problem resolution and uptime are both critically important to professional hosters.  So, to prove this, we’re offering free support with Parallels Plesk Automation.  This support offer covers all of your nodes (each of which require Parallels Plesk Panel Unlimited Dedicated licenses).  This means Parallels will provide support for your Management Node as well as your Web Hosting and Mail nodes.

But, we also recognize that self-help and the ability to identify and reduce problems before they happen are big factors in maximizing your uptime.  We have tried to streamline Parallels Plesk Automation to make it simple to install, configure, and run.   When you add a new node, you can select one of many pre-configured workloads to install on it.  When you want to attach an existing Parallels Plesk Panel server, we give you the choice between assimilating it – where no website settings are touched – or transferring it, where it moves into the new cluster but can be reverted back out. If you do encounter a problem that requires troubleshooting, you will be able to easily find the tools to help you do so on this dedicated support site here.

Parallels has made a strong commitment to improving the usability of our software, self-help tools, and support experience.  As you contemplate adopting Parallels Plesk Automation, we hope you’ll consider all of our new enhancements and free support offer.  We are trying to provide the best growth path forward in all of our next gen hosting systems, and our commitment to an enhanced support experience is a central part of this value.

Thanks for considering the new Parallels Plesk Automation.  We look forward to growing with you.

All the best,

Craig Bartholomew
Vice President Panel Products, Parallels

Rackspace & Hortonworks Cut Strategic Deal

Rackspace has cut a strategic agreement with Hortonworks, the open source Apache Hadoop start-up, to resell its platform.
The two are also going to try to eliminate the complexities and time-consuming manual processes in Hadoop required to implement a Big Data solution.
The announcement says the “joint effort will pursue an OpenStack-based Hadoop solution for the public and private cloud, which can easily be deployed in minutes.”
Gartner figures Big Data will drive $232 billion in IT spending through 2016.
Rackspace CTO John Engates allowed in a statement that “Running Hadoop on your own is complex, which is why we’re excited about our development efforts with Hortonworks. We believe Hortonworks as a collaborator brings a substantial advantage in technology, services and experience that will clearly benefit customers. We have customers today that deploy Hadoop clusters on dedicated hardware at Rackspace with support from Hortonworks. By joining forces, we intend to turn Hadoop into an on-demand service running on the Rackspace open cloud and in clusters on private cloud infrastructure in our data centers or the customer’s data center. The Hortonworks Data Platform packages the open source Apache version of Hadoop. That aligns with our vision of an open cloud future that eliminates fear of vendor lock-in, and allows customers to confidently invest in a technology for the long term.”
