Big data. Little data. Offsite data. On-premises data. Primary data. Archive data. Data comes in all shapes and sizes. As a culture of pack rats, we all love data of all kinds. We even conducted a whole campaign last year where we told everyone to «Embrace Storage Hogs.» And for good reason. The reality is that unless there’s a very compelling reason not to, most of us like to save most of our data «just in case.»
And based on the results of our latest survey, that may be exactly what you’re doing. This summer, while at the Cloud Computing Expo in New York, we conducted a survey of nearly 150 (cloud-disposed) attendees.

Community-Enabled Solutions Are the Future
Involving the community can lead to very successful solutions and several companies are taking advantage of this trend.
Solutions from legacy IT vendors face increasing challenges from start-ups. These legacy solutions, while technologically advanced, fall behind when customers evaluate features/function. For example, Amazon built a very successful cloud solution with experience from a large community of start-ups and beat IBM to win the CIA’s multi-year cloud deal.
Several legacy IT vendors are seeing revenue drop as a result of increased losses to start-ups under current market conditions. While analyzing an uptick of such wins, I noticed a trend that the commonalities between winning solutions included strong community support. In this context, community is a collection of start-ups, partners and/or consumers. Below are some solutions enabled by strong community support that I believe are challenging legacy vendors’ solutions.
The BIGGEST #BigData Reach Is @CloudExpo Twitter Site!
Based on a report from TweetReach, a provider of Twitter analytics reporting, #BigData gets the most impressions on the @CloudExpo Twitter site with an estimated reach of 130,391 accounts and 165,043 impressions on Twitter. As the number one contributor on the topic of BigData, @CloudExpo also provides the highest exposure with over 57,200 followers, with @BigDataExpo providing the most retweets and mentions.

The strategic dynamics of the market are in the middle of a paradigm shift where communications are increasingly data centric – VOIP, M2M messaging, social messaging, file sharing etc. There is a power struggle between telecom companies, carriers, and service providers on one side and OTT (over the top) vendors (Apple, Microsoft, Google, Skype, WhatsApp) on the other side for control of these new forms of communication.
The question for service providers is straightforward – do they keep watching OTT vendors take over the market, be content with providing access services, and continue seeing a downtrend in APRUs; or do they proactively leverage their strategic strength and claim their stake in the OTT market?

ARM Server ‘Microservers’ – Will They Change Everything?
A new and innovative computing platform has arrived – the ARM Server, often referred to as a «Microserver». This platform has some tremendous advantages over traditional rack-based Intel/AMD servers and has the potential to transform Cloud computing, Big Data processing, and the corporate data center.
Not familiar with microservers? Not many are. They’re also called ARM Servers or ARM-based Servers. I stumbled across them simply because I was looking for a differentiator in the delivery of Big Data and I’m in Austin, home to an innovator in this field – Calxeda.
By «microserver,» I am NOT referring to products like the HP ProLiant MicroServer or the HP Moonshoot chassis, which are a technology comb-overs (i.e., Intel-based PCs). They are not microservers at all. This kind of marketing confusion is regrettable – which is perhaps why «ARM Server» seems to be the predominant term for this computing platform.
Survey: Five Out of Six Organizations Use or Plan to Use Cloud Storage
TwinStrata onWednesday announced the results of its 2013 Cloud Storage Adoption Survey. Conducted during the first half of 2013, the survey – updated from June 2012 – focuses on the attitudes and experiences of a cloud-friendly sample group as determined by their attendance at a recent cloud conference. The survey results compare how this cloud-mature group has shifted year-over-year and highlights advancements in adoption and shifts in viewpoint. Among the key findings:
Storage capacity requirements are quickly outstripping the ability of IT to support them, with three out of a full 60 percent of respondents agreeing, “It seems like we are always running out of storage.”
More than a third (37 percent) of respondents indicate that they have been using cloud computing for three or more years – an increase of more than a third over last year. Adoption rates across all cloud initiatives (including software as a service, platform as a service, infrastructure as a service and cloud storage) have increased year over year.

On the whole, cloud computing needs governance to succeed. If you think about it, at the end state of the cloud computing implementation, we’ll have thousands of services and data elements under management. To control how they are accessed, added, deleted, and altered, we need a solid approach, processes, procedures, and technology. That is why we call it ‘governance,’ or, more specifically, ‘service governance.’
