BI bites into a bigger slice of Oracle’s Red Stack

Oracle recently held its third annual Industry Analyst World conference at its Redwood Shores headquarters, and it came as no surprise to Ovum that business analytics featured as one of six major track themes (aligning nicely with our Big Data and Analytics Super Theme for 2013).

Oracle’s business intelligence (BI) and enterprise performance (EPM) portfolio is undoubtedly impressive in both breadth and depth. Having spent much time and effort rationalizing and updating its product set, Oracle is also planning innovative new analytics offerings through the convergence of new products, notably its Exalytics in-memory engine and Endeca-powered information discovery environment.

This will inevitably present product development, integration, and marketing challenges, but Oracle has the necessary engineering resources and budget to address all three. However, it needs to do so quickly.

MapR Creates a ‘Game Changer’: NoSQL + Hadoop

MapR Technologies, the Hadoop house, Wednesday released M7, a Big
Data platform that’s supposed to remove the usual trade-offs involved in
deploying a NoSQL database on Hadoop.

The widgetry packages Hadoop with HBase, the open source NoSQL
database modeled after Google’s BigTable and now used under Facebook’s
Messaging Platform. It promises high availability, performance, low latency
and ease of use.

Cloud and data explosion among big trends for enterprise IT, says survey

The latest cloud computing survey, this time from NaviSite, has examined enterprise IT’s strategies, in particular for coping with an increasingly data-heavy ecosystem, and found that cloud is at the forefront of the data strategy for IT execs.

The report interviewed more than 500 IT professionals from companies with more than 200 employees, and found intriguing trends in the enterprise space.

Cloud computing is one of the biggest trends facing enterprise IT departments today, according to a quarter of respondents. Slashed budgets was the top trend according to 31% of those surveyed, with data explosion (25%) rounding off the top three.

Racemi Migration Software Speeds Onboarding for HOSTING Customers

Racemi, a provider of automated server migration software that streamlines the process of migrating workloads to public clouds, has announced that it has been selected by cloud hosting provider HOSTING to expedite customer onboarding to its enterprise-class managed cloud hosting infrastructure.
Racemi’s DynaCenter server imaging technology quickly migrates data even between dissimilar physical, virtual or private cloud platforms, reducing the onboarding process from days to minutes.
HOSTING has implemented Racemi’s migration technology at its six data centers across the United States, from which it serves over 4,000 customers. The faster ramp up will accelerate the return on investment for HOSTING customers.

Stackdriver Launches Intelligent Monitoring Service Public Beta

Stackdriver has launched the public beta  of Stackdriver Intelligent Monitoring, a flexible and intuitive SaaS offering that provides rich insight into the health of cloud-powered systems, infrastructure, and applications.  The service features seamless integration with Amazon Web Services and Rackspace Cloud and is optimized for teams that manage complex distributed applications.  Customers can access the service immediately via the company’s website at www.stackdriver.com.

Stackdriver’s engineers set out to build a solution that:

  • Monitors applications, systems, and infrastructure components,
  • Identifies anomalies using modern analytics and machine learning, and
  • Drives remediation and automation using a proprietary policy framework.

Edmodo, a leading social learning platform that runs on AWS, has relied on Stackdriver for several months.  “The technology stack that powers Edmodo’s online learning platform is very sophisticated. We use a variety of application building blocks, including AWS services and open source server software,” noted Kimo Rosenbaum, Infrastructure Architect.  “Before Stackdriver, we monitored our stack with many disparate tools, often designed without the dynamic nature of the cloud in mind.  With Stackdriver, we can monitor our systems, AWS services, and applications with one simple interface built for cloud-based services.”

The Polyglot PaaS Platform

This simple phrase encapsulates so much more than just the notion of platforms capable of supporting multiple development languages. It comprises the notion of an operationalized polyglot platform, one that brings standardization to operations while providing flexibility for developers to choose the right tool (language) for the job (application).
To understand why this is so important (and game-changing) you have to understand traditional enterprise application platforms. They are largely single-language platforms (think .NET and Java EE) that are operationalized only in the sense that scripting languages are capable of remotely modifying platform configurations and restarting the daemon. Enterprise organizations have long standardized on a few key platforms as a means to constrain the costs associated with licensing (OSS gained traction this way) and more importantly, administrative overhead.
