Cloud People: A Who’s Who of Cloud Computing

Behind every cloud or cloud-based solution, there are real people…A robust ecosystem of solutions providers has emerged around cloud computing. But who are the CEOs & CTOs behind those providers, who are the internal and external entrepreneurs driving companies involved in the Cloud, who are the leading developers, analysts, researchers, marketing professionals, authors…who, in short, are the people behind the cloud? This list of «Cloud People» will be updated regularly between now and November 5-8, 2012, when 11th Cloud Expo | Cloud Expo Silicon Valley opens its doors in the Santa Clara Convention Center, in the heart of California’s Silicon Valley.

Brocade’s Simon Pamplin: Digging deep into the future of SDN

With software defined networking (SDN), the network as we know it, along with the way businesses use computing processes, could be changed beyond all recognition.

And Brocade is at the very heart of that shift, being founder members of OpenFlow and OpenStack and pushing ahead with technologies that ensure its customers are SDN-ready.

Separating the data and control planes, SDN, as the name suggests, puts a layer of software between the components a network runs on and the network admin running them, leading in theory to a higher performance, more efficient networking process.

Yet there have been criticisms of SDN, ranging from accusations of overhype and lack of implementation, to lack of interoperability, to not being in the interest of larger vendors.

But as Simon Pamplin, Brocade enterprise pre-sales manager explains in a call to CloudTech, SDN is in an evolving, almost embryonic stage, meaning not everything’s going to …

The Paradox of Ephemeral Cloud Storage

The very name is kind of ridiculous, don’t you think? The word “ephemeral” means it can go away. It’s temporary. Fleeting, even. So why would I want to depend on storing something in a medium that can disappear without warning? And why am I forced to buy more of it when all I want is more CPUs or RAM?
Welcome to the paradox of ephemeral storage from cloud computing providers.
Ephemeral storage exists only because of how first-generation cloud providers chunk up servers. The business model is simple: they buy a physical server and try to sell as many virtual machines (VMs) as possible on top of that physical server. Since the VMs are trapped on physical machines in this approach, first-generation providers dictate cookie-cutter sizes that make that stacking game easier for themselves.

Hey Network Solutions, New Rule: Use Social During an Outage

Network Solutions is in trouble today. Rumor has it DNS issues are the root cause, but it’s unclear. What is clear is if your site is hosted by NetSol it is unreachable.

If you dig really hard you can get links to their blog which might offer more detail. But… it’s unreachable (duh).

I picture NetSol personnel happily posting critical updates to a blog only they can reach.

New Rule: If your servers/dns/routers/network is experiencing problems, use your Twitter and Facebook accounts to communicate with customers. Don’t want your dirty laundry messing up your marketing? Set up Twitter/FB Support accounts.
