Türk Telekom and Akamai Partner to Build CDN and Accelerate Media

Türk Telekom and Akamai Technologies have signed a strategic partnership to jointly build and manage a high-capacity Operator Content Delivery Network (OCDN) in Turkey for high-quality delivery of online content and video. The partnership, which will optimize the network efficiency of Turkey’s Internet infrastructure, was announced at a press conference in London attended by Türk Telekom CEO Tahsin Yılmaz and Akamai CEO Tom Leighton.
The partnership will ensure a significant increase in speed and performance for broadband and mobile users in Turkey, particularly when accessing social media and popular online video sites. Object Storage from Dusk ‘till Dawn

Who said storage is boring? I’m not lying when I’m writing that I’m on my way to a place in the desert, far away from regular society, for a secret meeting with the Top Guns of the Cloud & Web Industry. I’m one of a select group of Object Storage visionaries who have been invited to meet the industry’s greatest, listen to their challenges and teach them how object storage – when done well – can solve all of their problems.
There is no arguing that object storage is currently the most watched storage paradigm. Object storage is potentially an even more important evolution than virtualization and cloud computing were 5 years ago: it’s about data, information, companies’ most valuable assets. The challenge of building Exabyte-size storage clouds is no longer just a concern for Facebook, Google and Amazon.

PaaS has evolved quickly…and will continue to do so

Laurent Lachal, Senior Analyst, Ovum Software

PaaS is a multi-faceted phenomenon that has been evolving very rapidly in the past five years, and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Enterprises should get ready to anticipate and take advantage of new PaaS developments. To do so, they should ask vendors some hard questions about strategy plans and product roadmaps. For more information, see the Ovum report PaaS: Two More Years of Confusion Ahead.

PaaS has quickly evolved in the past few years

Today’s PaaS is quite different from that of yesterday, and this can cause confusion. Its rapid evolution has so far partly reflected the evolution of the overall cloud computing market. PaaS has, for example, evolved from a focus on public clouds to private and hybrid clouds, from green-field to legacy applications, and from being packaged with its own infrastructure services to supporting third-party (mostly IaaS …

OpenNebula 4.4 Beta Released

You are surely aware of the new features introduced in OpenNebula 4.2 Flame, and its focus to strengthen the most demanded and useful features. So now is time to move forward and implement new features demanded by our uses and that’s why the beta version OpenNebula 4.4 Retina is out for testing! This release includes important features that meet real demands from production environments, with a focus on optimization of storage, monitoring, cloud bursting, and public cloud interfaces.

OpenNebula Retina includes support for multiple system datastores, which enables a much more efficient usage of the storage resources for running Virtual Machines. This feature ships with different scheduling policies for storage load balancing, intended to instruct OpenNebula to spread the running Virtual Machines across different storage mediums to optimize their use. This translates in the ability to define more than one disk (or other backend) to hold running VMs in a particular cluster. Monitorization subsystem in OpenNebula underwent a major redesign as well, effectively switching from a pulling mechanism to a pushing model, with the implications in scalability improvements.

Impact of the Allegations Surrounding the NSA Spying on Cloud Privacy

The latest headlines in the ongoing surveillance soap opera focus on the revelation that the U.S. has been eavesdropping directly on German Prime Minister Angela Merkel. The reaction in Germany has been strong with many officials publically condemning the surveillance.
After the NSA’s activity first came to light, many in Europe called for stricter protection of EU data and privacy rights. But now, Merkel is calling for stronger Internet technology in Germany, specifically to address the fact all major data centers are in the U.S. and China.
It isn’t clear exactly how these latest developments will further impact German and other EU countries’ usage of U.S. cloud service providers. Germany already has some of the strictest data privacy regulations in the world. Known as BDSG, German regulations include restrictions on how personal information is collected, requiring explicit permission from individuals. BDSG also requires a more formalized structure for data transfers across the German border.
