Misconceptions Around App Testing in the Private Cloud

The private cloud is misunderstood. At this stage, vendors can be forgiven for not having a firm idea of what the private cloud is and how it can uniquely improve their processes. Too many service providers have branded legacy technologies as «cloud-based,» warping buyers’ expectations about what a private cloud actually is and should do. In some cases, what developers and testers get with these cloud-washed solutions are nothing more than heavily virtualized environments that offer little or none of the scalability, automation, self-service, and on-demand provisioning associated with cloud computing at-large.
As a result, organizations may think of the private cloud as simply a slight update to their internal IT systems, a fresh coat of paint on the same aging infrastructure that they have been looking to leave behind as new dynamic applications become more central to their businesses. They want a cloud platform that can enable more agile software lifecycles, with streamlined testing and abundant resources for developers, but these misconceptions may lead them to conclude that the public cloud is the only way to achieve these goals and facilitate quicker time-to-market, as well as higher programmer productivity.

The Federal Government Journey to Cloud Computing: Lessons Learned

In February 2011, Vivek Kundra announced the “Cloud First” policy across the US Government. The directive, issued through the Office of Management and Budget, required agencies to give cloud technology first priority in developing IT projects. He also described cloud computing as a “10 year journey”. According to a Deltek report, federal agency spending on cloud computing will grow from $2.3 billion in fiscal 2013 to $6.1 billion by fiscal 2018. This forecast clearly raises the importance of understanding what has happened over the past few years.

The Seven Deadly Sins of Private Cloud

The private cloud momentum among enterprises is undeniable. Private cloud is able to deliver the agility and ease-of-use that users have come to expect – without sacrificing any of the security or control that is critical to so many industries. But implemented incorrectly, there’s no question that private clouds can be a costly and frustrating undertaking.
In his session at 14th Cloud Expo, Stuart Robbins, CIO Evangelist at Metacloud, will spell out the most common mistakes that he and his colleagues have seen in their experience working with companies that have attempted to implement private clouds. He’ll talk about what has gone wrong for these firms, as well as what steps your company can take to avoid falling into similar traps as you pursue your own private cloud.

The Future of Cloud Is Hybrid… and Seamless

It’s probably no surprise that I have long advocated the position that hybrid cloud would eventually become «the standard» architecture with respect to, well, cloud computing. As the dev/ops crowd at Glue Con was recently reminded by the self-styled «most obnoxious man in cloud», Josh McKenty, you can only add to what exists in the data center. You can’t simply rip and replace, forklifts are not allowed, and allowances must be made for how to integrate with existing systems no matter how onerous that might be. The future is, as he put it, open and closed, traditional and modern, automated and human.
I would add to that, it is both public and private, with respect to cloud.
