A Design for an Agile Cloud Management Platform

In the early part of 2013, EMC announced a new storage virtualization product called ViPR that delivers a software interface to block, object and HDFS storage services layered on heterogeneous storage. As part of that announcement there was an architectural discussion regarding how ViPR would be providing these services to applications that entails breaking out the design into two components: the control plane and the data plane.
The control plane provides common interfaces for provisioning, policy & management while the data plane provides interfaces for data access from applications. In separating out these two layers, EMC creates an architecture that is agile and enables new services to be added over time without impacting production services. Since ViPR is focused on storage, it will, unfortunately, never be expanded to encompass an entire cloud management stack. However, the architecture is interesting and aspects of it lend itself to building a best-of-breed cloud management platform.

Thinking About Enterprise Mobility, Digital Transformation and Doctrine

Last week I was in Europe speaking and teaching enterprise mobility and digital transformation strategies. I worked with several large multinational companies where I heard the same questions asked, «How do we convince our executives that we must change, and invest in change? How do we establish a culture of innovation, capable of winning in a world of digital transformation?» The change they were referring to had to do with the convergence of the physical world with the digital and its impact on markets. These changes are introducing new ways of selling, marketing, manufacturing and moving products in a digital world that is rapidly being transformed as a result of innovations in social, mobile, analytics and cloud technologies. We are seeing entire industries and marketplaces turned upside down as a result of these innovations. How can companies deal with all these changes at the pace required to remain competitive?

Seven Cloud Predictions for 2014

With the end of the year buzz around predictions, it’s hard not to join in the conversation. Our CenturyLink Cloud leadership team came together for a few predictions for the year head – and to show we are keepin’ it real, we scored last year’s predictions as well.
1. Enterprise-buyer demand fuels cloud consolidation. Well past the «dipping their toes in» stage with cloud-native apps, enterprises are now accelerating the migration of business-critical applications to the cloud. They will demand more complete, mature cloud solutions from the IT providers they already know and trust. This, in turn, will result in more cloud M&A activity as incumbent vendors solidify their cloud strategy and enhance offerings.

Identity Challenges in Cloud Computing

Enterprises are seeing a great potential in cloud-based services. However, security is a primary concern that keeps enterprise from harnessing the full potential. Identity management is one of the most important aspects of security. There is always an authentication required in an application to identify the user and provide service based on the user details. Authorization is required to allow only privilege user to execute privilege operation. An identity store required to maintain the identity and roles for the user.
Identity Management is a solution that takes into consideration all the identity concerns: authentication, authorization and maintaining identity.
In this article we will discuss some of the challenges occur while moving to the cloud in terms of identity. And what are the Microsoft technologies available to resolve identity management issues over the cloud and scenarios and solutions to use those technologies
