CIO Focus Interviews: A Summary Over the Past Year

A year ago, I started a CIO Focus Interview segment on the blog. I’ve gotten the chance to speak with a handful of thought leading CIOs and CTOs. All have provided great insights and shown why they are on the cutting edge of all things IT. Below is a summary and link to each of the interviews.

CIO Focus Interview: Stuart Appley, Shorenstein

CIO Focus Interview: Stuart AppleyStuart is the CIO at Shorenstein, a San Francisco based real estate investment firm. One of Stuart’s biggest challenges is operating in a company culture that is a little older making it more difficult to get people to adopt technologies and bring them up to speed. Last year, Stuart completed a large cloud ERP project that allowed him to reduce a lot of application sets. Stuart is a strong believer that IT needs to act as an advisor to the business. Date: Thursday, October 22, 2015

Time: 04:00 PM British Summer Time

Duration: 1 hour

Data is no longer contained within the walls of a data center. Devices or “things” need to share data with the same quality of service whether they are in remote corners of the world or in major metropolitan areas. Flexibility, speed, and security area all required elements for real-time data analysis in IoT projects and any company wanting to transform with the Internet of Things; as a result, the Internet of Things is becoming the primary application for cloud computing.

In a recent study from IBM and Business Cloud News, we learned that nearly two-thirds of respondents agree companies that are slow to integrate cloud into their IoT solutions will fall behind the competition. Learn more about current trends and future growth opportunities as data, engagement, and cloud all converge around the Internet of Things.

  • See how the Internet of Things is becoming the primary application for cloud computing
  • Review your readiness to integrate cloud and IoT solutions

BT discusses its interests in South East Asia

Cloud SEANothing better reflects the way the Cloud is changing the traditional parameters of telecom operators than BT’s presence at this morning’s Cloud South East Asia keynotes in Kuala Lumpur.

Thanaraj Kanagalingam, BT’s regional solutions director, joined the likes of SingTel, Telekom Malaysia and MDeC in presenting at the well-attended conference, where he set out BT’s strategic presence in the region, itself a microcosm of the UK’s most recognisable telco’s increasingly global strategy and reach.

In South East Asia specifically, BT has been active in the networked IT business for a number of years, via acquisitions of local players such as Frontline (Singapore-based IT consulting and services company), which has driven them towards an ICT and telecommunications convergence play.

Subsequently BT has extended itself into the contact centre line business – with very strong links to the airline industries – and is  now moving into what it is called ‘the Cloud of Clouds’ – positioning itself through partnerships with existing Cloud service providers, and providing a new array of digital services to enterprise customers.

“It’s all about network connectivity,” explained Kanagalingam, answering questions after his keynote. “A lot of enterprises here want to go out to a global market, so when they establish themselves in China, in India, and so forth, they need to have that connectivity. BT provides this from a network perspective, from a telco perspective. We partner with local partners in each of these regions but at the same time leverage our traditional framework.”

A focal point of BT’s global appeal is security (a topic that has predictably dominated numerous discussions at Cloud South East Asia). Specifically, the telco looks to draw on its strengths to provide a more secure connectivity to enterprise customers. “For us,” explains Kanagalingam, “service is encompassing hybrid intelligent network, world class leading security coupled with PAYG cloud computing solution.”

Logs and Metrics | @DevOpsSummit @Jut_Inc #DevOps #API #Microservices

IT data is typically silo’d by the various tools in place. Unifying all the log, metric and event data in one analytics platform stops finger pointing and provides the end-to-end correlation. Logs, metrics and custom event data can be joined to tell the holistic story of your software and operations. For example, users can correlate code deploys to system performance to application error codes.

Developing a winning hybrid cloud strategy

image

The 2015 BCN Annual Industry Survey revealed two thirds of enterprises plan to implement multiple cloud services over the next 18 months, but adopting a hybrid cloud strategy can be far from straightforward. As a result there is often a gap between intention and strategic readiness that can lead to considerable strain on the IT resources of a company.

This Business Cloud News Whitepaper, in association with HP investigates the factors both driving and inhibiting hybrid cloud deployment, looks at how resources will be managed across platforms and explores the right mix of skills to manage applications, platforms, networks and systems in a hybrid environment.

These are some of the key issues that need to be tackled by CIOs if they are to take a central role in preparing their IT organisations for a hybrid world.

Download the report now to find out what tools, technologies, and skills are required for a successful hybrid cloud strategy.

Fill in this short form to download the Whitepaper – Fields labelled with * are mandatory. By downloading this whitepaper, BCN may pass your details to the sponsor and use your information in future to provide you with targeted BCN promotions. You can opt out of these at any time.

Containers: New Ways to Manage Apps | @DevOpsSummit @CoreOSLinux #DevOps #Microservices

The last decade was about virtual machines, but the next one is about containers. Containers enable a service to run on any host at any time. Traditional tools are starting to show cracks because they were not designed for this level of application portability. Now is the time to look at new ways to deploy and manage applications at scale.
In his session at @DevOpsSummit, Brian “Redbeard” Harrington, a principal architect at CoreOS, will examine how CoreOS helps teams run in production. Attendees will understand how different components work together to solve the problems to manage applications at scale.

Containers and Microservices By @AppDynamics | @DevOpsSummit #DevOps #Docker #Microservices

Overgrown applications have given way to modular applications, driven by the need to break larger problems into smaller problems. Similarly large monolithic development processes have been forced to be broken into smaller agile development cycles. Looking at trends in software development, microservices architectures meet the same demands.

Additional benefits of microservices architectures are compartmentalization and a limited impact of service failure versus a complete software malfunction. The problem is there are a lot of moving parts in these designs; this makes assuring performance complex especially if the services are geographically distributed or provided by multiple third parties.

Demystify Analytics By @EMCCorp | @CloudExpo #IoT #BigData #Microservices

There are so many tools and techniques for data analytics that even for a data scientist the choices, possible systems, and even the types of data can be daunting.
In his session at @ThingsExpo, Chris Harrold, Global CTO for Big Data Solutions for EMC Corporation, will show how to perform a simple, but meaningful analysis of social sentiment data using freely available tools that take only minutes to download and install. Participants will get the download information, scripts, and complete end-to-end walkthrough of the analysis from start to finish. Participants will also be given the practical knowledge to take their analysis to the next level and to have a conversation with their lines of business and management to show how easy it can be to add a social analytics package to their overall data analytics strategies.
