Two weeks ago (November 3-5), I attended the Cloud Expo Silicon Valley as a speaker, where I presented on the security and privacy due diligence requirements for cloud solutions.
Cloud security is a topical issue for every CIO, CISO, and technology buyer. Decision-makers are always looking for insights on how to mitigate the security risks of implementing and using cloud solutions. Based on the presentation topics covered at the conference, as well as the general discussions heard between sessions, I wanted to share some of my observations on emerging trends. As cyber security serves as a foundation and necessary defense for customer and cloud solutions, cyber becomes more and more commoditized. The real impact is how do we deliver a confidence or trust to customers and their customer journey with our organizations.

Monetizing IoT: Show Me the Money! | @ThingsExpo #IoT #M2M #BigData
The Internet of Things (IoT) is growing rapidly by extending current technologies, products and networks. By 2020, Cisco estimates there will be 50 billion connected devices. Gartner has forecast revenues of over $300 billion, just to IoT suppliers. Now is the time to figure out how you’ll make money – not just create innovative products.
With hundreds of new products and companies jumping into the IoT fray every month, there’s no shortage of innovation. Despite this, McKinsey/VisionMobile data shows «less than 10 percent of IoT developers are making enough to support a reasonably sized team.”
Delivering the Honeywell User Experience Through OnPrem Monitoring | @CloudExpo #Cloud
Being able to ensure a positive experience for your customers and end users is one of the hallmarks of any great company. Yet with all of the different internal and external online systems needed to do that, early detection and rapid response to performance issues becomes harder and more expensive.
Join us for the OpsCast, Delivering the Honeywell User Experience Through OnPrem Monitoring, to learn how Honeywell International, one of the world’s largest producers of commercial and consumer technology, has deployed synthetic OnPrem agents throughout their global networks. Citing specific examples of obstacles that the company has faced, Paul Fries, Monitoring Leader at Honeywell, will show how their customers benefit from synthetic OnPrem monitoring.
Machine to Container (M2C) Teleports Existing Enterprise Apps to the Cloud
It’s been a busy time for tech’s ongoing infatuation with containers. Amazon just announced EC2 Container Registry to simply container management. The new Azure container service taps into Microsoft’s partnership with Docker and Mesosphere. You know when there’s a standard for containers on the table there’s money on the table, too.
Everyone is talking containers because they reduce a ton of development-related challenges and make it much easier to move across production and testing environments and clouds. Containers are the technology that, many believe, deliver on the long-promised portability in the cloud to avoid vendor lock-in, and put developers, system administrators and their enterprises in the driver’s seat.
Six Reasons Your API Is the Windows Vista of APIs By @JustinRohrman | @CloudExpo #API #Cloud
Does your API suck? Okay, that one needs a little explanation.
If you’ve developed an API, it exposes some functionality to users. It might suck to learn. The documentation might be unclear and the function signatures counter-intuitive. It might suck to use, doing a lot of things, but never particularly what you really need, right now.
After a great deal of working with companies developing new API functionality, and also building out demo material from publicly available APIs (starting with the thought «this should be easy …») I have developed some opinions on the subject. Just like a restaurant that doesn’t pay attention to detail, an awkward API can have a dozen small things that add up to a big problem. Misplaced silverware, a long wait time, a slow waiter, details wrong on the order … no one of these will make you want to stand up and leave, but put together, they’ll make sure you never come back.
The World’s Many IoTs ‘Power Panel’ at @ThingsExpo | #IoT #M2M #BigData
The Internet of Things is clearly many things: data collection and analytics, wearables, Smart Grids and Smart Cities, the Industrial Internet, and more. Cool platforms like Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Intel’s Galileo and Edison, and a diverse world of sensors are making the IoT a great toy box for developers in all these areas.
In this Power Panel at @ThingsExpo, moderated by Conference Chair Roger Strukhoff, panelists discussed what things are the most important, which will have the most profound effect on the world, and what should we expect to see over the next couple of years.
Millenials Impact on Business Technology
The Millennial Generation, aged 18 to 34 is having an increased impact on business technology. Born into the age of the PC and early internet this demographic is more proficient and demanding of apps, devices and IT services than earlier generations. In the past progressive IT organizations would consider this group as a category to accommodate, making the company appealing to college recruits and new hires. More recently however, this generation is now mainstream with increased influence driving IT strategy. They now include partners at large firms, doctors that never used paper charts and executives making purchase decisions.

Cloud Expo Summary By @coyboy02 | @CloudExpo #IoT #Cloud #DevOps
Day 1 of Cloud Expo in Santa Clara, California opened with an inspiring keynote from Jason Bloomberg, president of Intellyx, and industry expert on architecting agility for enterprise environments.
The ProfitBricks team was especially impressed with Jason’s talk about how digital transformation involves more organizational change than simple technology change and how today’s businesses need to capitalize on disruption to not only innovate at a more rapid pace but also drive organizational wide transformation. He further discussed how employing modern digital practices when architecting infrastructure solutions, such as self organization and DevOps, can provide a blueprint to reimagine how ongoing innovation can continually drive strategic value in new ways.
