Kill the Middleman with a #Blockchain | @CloudEXPO @YFain @Cloud #CIO #FinTech #Blockchain #SmartCities

Blockchain is a new buzzword that promises to revolutionize the way we manage data. If the data is stored in a blockchain there is no need for a middleman – the distributed database is stored on multiple and there is no need to have a centralized server that will ensure that the transactions can be trusted.

The best way to understand how a blockchain works is to build one. During this presentation, we’ll start with covering the basics (hash, nounce, block, smart contracts) and then we’ll create a simple blockchain and a web client for it.

Disclaimer. This presentation is not about bitcoins, and it won’t make you rich overnight.

How to Improve SD-WAN App Performance | @CloudEXPO @Apcela #Cloud #CIO #API #Serverless #DataCenter

Yesterday, applications resided in the data center, while users resided in an office and enterprises relied on carriers for their WAN transport architecture. With this legacy approach, applications resided in centralized data centers with MPLS networks. Today, IT is moving to the cloud and users are mobile with the public internet being an increasingly critical component of the enterprise WAN and application performance. However, as applications move to the cloud, enterprises are struggling with increased application performance issues. Some of these include:

Exploring specific security pain points with enterprise cloud adoption

While the enterprise push to public cloud continues apace, it does not hurt to hear of figures which puts the scope of the journey in perspective.

According to new figures from Ping Identity, only one in five enterprises polled said they have more than half of their IT infrastructure hosted in the public cloud. Three quarters (75%) in comparison have a hybrid approach.

Perhaps not surprisingly, the key aspect holding these organisations back is security. 43% of the 300 US-based respondents said it was the biggest obstacle to cloud adoption, while 37% said it was the biggest barrier to software as a service (SaaS) adoption.

There are plenty of reasons to be fearful. More than a quarter (27%) of those polled admitted they have experienced a breach of customer identity data stored either in a public cloud, on-premises or SaaS app provider's cloud. As a result, 71% said they were spending more on protecting customer identity data on a yearly basis.

When it came to specific security tools, multi-factor authentication was cited by nine out of 10 respondents as an effective control. Yet only 60% of firms polled said they used it. Identity federation and biometric authentication were also seen as key methods, but adoption was low at 34% and 22% respectively.

Even though the new year is only less than a month old, research has shown continued enterprise concern around security in the cloud. According to NetEnrich, large enterprises were 'eagerly adopting cloud infrastructure, applications and services', albeit with three quarters (72%) noting security was their top priority for this year.

"Safeguarding customer, proprietary and partner data is more important than ever for enterprises seeking to build trust and transition to a more hybrid IT infrastructure," said Richard Bird, Ping Identity chief customer information officer. "It's imperative that IT professionals understand the value and effectiveness of the right security controls for their organisations before taking a blanket approach to protecting their data."

Lloyd’s bank to advance digitisation by transferring accounts away from legacy IT

Connor Jones

25 Jan, 2019

Lloyds bank is planning to move 500,000 customer accounts from its Intelligent Finance division out of its legacy IT onto a cloud-based banking platform built by Thought Machine, according to the <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/ae57bfcc-1e50-11e9-b2f7-97e4dbd3580d" target="_blank"><em>FT</em></a>.

Intelligent Finance is a sunsetted business which services existing customers and doesn't take on new ones.

Back in November, Lloyds announced a partnership with and £11 million investment in Thought Machine, as part of an initiative to accelerate the banks' digital transformation.

Zak Mian, group director of transformation at Lloyds Banking Group, said at the time: "A key part of our recently launched three-year strategic plan is applying technology innovation to meet our customers' evolving needs.

"I'm really excited to work with the <a href="https://www.cloudpro.co.uk/saas/7822/ibm-chosen-to-push-cloud-native-ban… target="_blank">Thought Machine</a> team to explore ways to simplify and enhance our IT architecture and helping on our journey to make banking easy and simple for customers."

The downside of this digital transformation is that while it's cutting costs, it's also costing jobs. Lloyds has already axed over a thousand of its employees in the last year in two redundancy rounds and now its legacy IT is getting the boot, so will more people whose job it is to maintain those systems.

Lloyd's bank has declined to comment on the matter.

Back in November 2018, <a href="https://www.itpro.co.uk/digital-transformation/32301/lloyds-bank-switche… target="_blank">Lloyds announced</a> that it would cut 6,000 jobs and create 8,000 new digital jobs in the process, with 75% of those affected expected to move into those new positions.

Some specialist roles will also be recruited externally, such as data scientists and software engineers. The bank confirmed that no branches are planned to close due to the changes.

"Lloyds Banking Group will create an additional 2,000 roles, as it strengthens its capability to offer customers new leading-edge digital banking products and services," a spokesperson said at the time.

"The Group is investing to further digitise the bank and will refresh some existing roles and create new roles within its structure, while also providing comprehensive retraining for colleagues to help them build their capabilities to meet the demands of these future roles."

From a business perspective, migrating away from legacy IT is cost-effective and better for security, something that is of paramount importance to all banks.

"It is the legacy that gets you," <a href="https://www.itpro.co.uk/data-breaches/31245/it-s-the-legacy-that-gets-yo… target="_blank">said TalkTalk former CEO Dido Harding</a> referencing the risks of outdated IT in cyber security.

Maintaining these outdated systems could account for up to 80% of a bank's IT budget and in Lloyds's case, it could save them £750 million in annual IT costs, according to the <em>FT</em> report.

BTU general secretary Mark Brown said to the <em>Telegraph</em>: "What they are building is a completely new IT system, and that won't need anywhere near the number of people that are involved in the current IT system.

"If it works and doesn't collapse, it is going to completely change retail banking," said Brown.&nbsp;

Many in the banking sector fear further job losses to more efficient tech, especially after the news this week that Santander will close 140 of high street branches due to customers' evolving needs and preferences towards <a href="https://www.cloudpro.co.uk/finance/6292/how-to-use-mobile-banking-safely" target="_blank">online and digital banking</a>.

It said that branch transactions fell 23% while digital banking transaction increased 99% last year and figures from the Office for National Statistics show that nearly 6,000 local branches have shut since 2010 which is a fall of a third.

Three Pillars of CIA Triad IoT Security | @CloudEXPO @WindRiver #IoT #IIoT #SmartCities #DigitalTransformation

The transition from closed networks to enterprise IT networks to the public Internet is accelerating at an alarming pace-and justly raising alarms about security. As we become increasingly reliant on intelligent, interconnected devices in every aspect of our lives, how do we protect potentially billions of them from intrusions and interference that could compromise personal privacy or threaten public safety?

This discussion will highlight which means there are to protect IoT devices from unauthorized access, use, disclosure, disruption, modification, or even destruction. The base foundation for this kind of security is the CIA triad, composed of the following three pillars: confidentiality, integrity and availability. Confidentiality for preserving authorized restrictions on access and disclosure; integrity for guarding against improper information modification or destruction and ensuring information nonrepudiation and authenticity; and availability for ensuring timely and reliable access to the device and information.

Microsoft Office 365 goes down across Europe

Clare Hopping

25 Jan, 2019

Microsoft’s Office 365 cloud-powered productivity suite went down yesterday morning across Europe, with users reporting issues connecting to the cloud-hosted email servers at around 9.30am.

The tech giant confirmed that it was experiencing problems with its servers and it was working on a fix to get email back up and running.

“We’re investigating an issue where users can’t access their mailboxes through multiple protocols,” the company posted on Twitter. “More details are published in the admin center under EX172491, available to your Microsoft 365 admin.”

However, customers weren’t particularly happy about the outage (who is ever joyous when they can’t access a key part of their working arsenal?!), especially when Microsoft failed to keep users updated about an estimated fix.

The company’s Office 365 status page didn’t provide much in the way of detail about the problem. In fact, it said that the tool was running smoothly, despite users bombarding the company with comments and complaints.

“I think its time to take someone to court for disruption of business if a critical system like email can be down for +6 hours without resolution for a whole geographical region #Office365,” Twitter user @the_adam_tm said.

Some joked that the whole concept of email was broken if they couldn’t access their Office 365 accounts. “Hey @Microsoft
your #office365 has been down for 9 hours now. Shall I go to a local post office to send my emails?” @konradzaczek wrote on the social network.

Meanwhile, businesses such as Arcsystems used the outage as an opportunity to promote its disaster recovery solutions.

Later in the day, Microsoft’s advice remained to acknowledge the issue, but still advised customers keep an eye on the Admin Centre for updates. It said it had determined the cause of the problem and was working on a fix.

“We’re working to resolve difficulties a limited subset of enterprise customers in Europe are experiencing when attempting to access Exchange Online. Consumers are not affected. Admins can find status updates on the Admin Center.”
