Enterprise Cloud Adoption Framework

“We’re actually very bullish about PaaS as the architecture for a lot of next generation apps,” noted Brett Adam, Chief Technology Officer at rPath, in this exclusive Q&A. “But,” he continued, “we see true PaaS as it’s been popularized in the market – you may think of it as “Silicon Valley PaaS” – is too constraining for the types of applications that enterprises depend upon today.”
Q: Tell me about the Enterprise Cloud Adoption Framework. What inspired it?
Brett Adam: We’re seeing enterprise IT and traditional service providers under extraordinary pressure to transform to cloud-based delivery and business models, but there are few reliable resources to guide what is a fairly massive architectural transformation. Despite substantial opinions about how to adopt cloud, the issue of standardization wasn’t getting the attention it deserved. We believe standardization is absolutely crucial. Uniquely, this framework looks at the cloud transformation through the lens of standardization as the driver and enabler for achieving on-demand, elastic IT.

Cloud Expo Silicon Valley: Object Storage for Big Data Panel

Object storage is the new storage paradigm that was specifically designed for massive volumes of unstructured data. Object Storage platforms are revolutionary in that they are designed to scale beyond petabytes and they don’t need a file system. Instead, the applications can talk to the storage directly through a REST API. But this is also the weakness of the concept, and the main argument of critics: it might take a long time for object storage to really break through as it depends on the applications. Advocates like to use the Amazon S3 success story and believe companies should implement object storage now to increase efficiency, scalability etc.
Big Data is no longer restricted to analytics projects, several kinds of Big Data are now identified. Big Unstructured Data is getting particularly much attention today because of the growth predictions about unstructured data. Object storage is pushed forward as the only viable long-term solution for many Big Unstructured Data projects (Media and Entertainment, Life Sciences, the Aerospace industry, etc.).

RackWare Delivers Automated Intelligence for the Cloud

Usually start-ups hit the radar with their 1.0 flagship release. RackWare, founded in 2009, waited for the 2.0 release of its Management Module (RMM) on Tuesday.
It’s apparently been too busy helping IT teams at Macy’s, Citi, Reuters, Amazon and SunGard take full advantage of their clouds to publicly enter the cloud infrastructure market, unveiling software that enables users to build any type of cloud – public, private or hybrid – without requiring application or operational changes.
The RMM widgetry is supposed to let users leverage their existing investments in infrastructure and applications and get four times greater availability and reliability in the process.

F5 Extends Dynamic Networking to Windows Server-Based Virtual Network Environments

F5 Networks, Inc. today announced the F5 Network Virtualization Solution for Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V. The solution gives F5 customers the flexibility to use the BIG-IP platform to deploy network services in cloud-driven data centers that are built on Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V. This announcement underscores F5’s commitment to deliver a dynamic, efficient data center that will ensure scalability, security, and manageability across an organization’s IT environments and systems.

With this solution, the same network-based services that the BIG-IP platform provides—such as local and global load balancing, advanced traffic steering, access control, and application security and acceleration—can now also be used to deliver applications in the Microsoft cloud and virtualized network environments. The solution is enabled by F5 BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager (LTM®) Virtual Edition (VE) running on Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V.

Organizations that use Hyper-V network virtualization to realize cost savings and operational efficiencies stand to gain many additional benefits from the F5 solution, including:

  • Improved Flexibility – Working in conjunction with Hyper-V
network virtualization, the F5 solution supports seamless, low-cost
migration to the cloud by allowing organizations to use the same
policies and IP addresses in the cloud that they currently use in the
    physical network.
  • Cost Savings – The F5 solution accelerates data center
consolidation by connecting hybrid cloud environments, enabling
organizations to cut costs while extending their applications and
    services.
  • Efficient Network Management – The F5 solution can
intelligently manage network traffic at layers 4-7, mitigating the
need for organizations to build and manage large layer 2 networks.
  • Streamlined ADN Services – The F5 solution runs on Windows
Server 2012 Hyper-V, and all services are applied in BIG-IP LTM VE, so
no software upgrades or special code is required on the physical
    network.

Cloudcuity™: Thought Leadership Translated to Operational Excellence

As my long-time readers have certainly noticed, the frequency of my posts have lengthened over the past few months. First, I would like to offer my apologies for being remiss in that department but I have had some extenuating circumstances.

For over three years I have been closely observing and actively participating in the government’s transition to cloud computing. Many of my observations, experiences and insights have been revealed through “Cloud Musings”, “Cloud Musings on Forbes” and in my first book “GovCloud: Cloud Computing for the Business of Government”. In parallel, I have also been designing strategies, building processes and creating transition tools all designed to reduce the risk and increase the value of cloud transformation projects. The culmination of my personal efforts and those of the entire team here at NJVC have now all been folded into our new brand for cloud computing operational excellence – Cloudcuity™
