Australia launches national cloud computing strategy

The Australian government has finally embraced cloud services as a critical element of the digital economy by releasing a National Cloud Computing Strategy. While not quite “cloud first”, the strategy creates an explicit requirement for agencies to consider cloud services for new ICT procurements, test and development activity, and to migrate existing websites to cloud services at natural refresh points.
When combined with a range of other measures, this represents a significant step forward in the modernization of the government’s thinking and approach to ICT industry development and to its own procurement and use of ICT.

Next two years “era of the hybrid cloud”, asserts Microsoft report
The latest cloud computing report this time comes from Microsoft in collaboration with 451 Research, and again looks towards the hybrid as the tangible future of cloud computing.
The study, ‘The New Era of Hosted Services’, took responses from more than 1500 organisations and revealed that in two years’ time 68% of organisations will adopt the hybrid cloud model, up from 49% currently.
“The next two years will be the era of the hybrid cloud”, trumpeted Marco Limena, Microsoft VP hosting service providers business.
This is simply the latest in a series of reports examining the importance of the hybrid cloud, utilising the best elements of private and public clouds.

Is Jive Ready to Sell Out?
Since Bloomberg blew the whistle the other day after finding out that SAP had been in talks to buy cloud-based Jive Software, but dropped the idea after deciding there was too much overlap between their product lines and Jive wouldn’t add enough market share, there’s been speculation that somebody else big will come along and scoop it up.
The names that come to mind are Oracle and IBM, even Salesforce.com, whose own social networking business software isn’t as comprehensive as Jive’s.
Jive is run by CEO Tony Zingale, who sold Mercury Interactive to HP for $4.5 billion in 2006 and Clarify to Nortel Networks for about $2.1 billion in 1999.
Jive’s market cap is currently $1.14 billion so it would take a few bucks to buy.
Forrester Research projects the market for social enterprise software will be worth $6.4 billion by 2016, up 60%.
Is Hybrid Cloud a Realistic Destination?
We’ve all heard it. Security and regulatory compliance are issues in the public cloud. And building a private cloud many say does not pass a cost/benefit analysis. Given these hurdles, what is an enterprise to do? Well, according to Datamation, 47% of enterprises are going to implement some sort of private cloud in 2013 regardless of perceived challenges. And Gartner’s latest report on public cloud computing adoption, finds that global spending on public cloud services is expected to grow from $76.9B in 2010 to $210B in 2016.
It’s become increasingly clear that every enterprise will have at least one internal cloud and at least one external cloud in use. As every enterprise architecture will be hybrid and multi-vendor, the better question is how to properly assess the enterprise portfolio to determine which applications and services are best delivered by public and private clouds.
