SAP AG has introduced a cloud-based service offering for telecommunication carriers to interconnect rich communication services on any mobile device or network.
The company designed an Internet Protocol multimedia subsystem to support its mobile services and allow end users to share videos, messages and files anywhere, SAP said Tuesday.
“As today’s mobile consumers persistently seek out the latest innovation and best possible user experience, operators must support cutting edge IP-based services to remain competitive,” said John Sims, president of SAP Mobile Services.
Sims added the business intends for its IMS hub to help operators test RCS and voice over LTE interworking systems.

As you may know, OpenNebula’s approach to cloud bursting (that is, its hybrid cloud model) is quite unique. The reason behind this uniqueness is the transparency to both end users and cloud administrators to use and maintain the cloud bursting functionality.

The transparency to cloud administrators comes from the fact that a an AWS EC2 region is modelled as any other host (albeit of potentially a much bigger capacity), so the scheduler can place VMs in EC2 as it will do in any other local host. Of course, the scheduler algorithm can be tuned so the EC2 host (or hosts, more on this below) is picked last, so it will be only used only if there is a real need (ie, the local infrastructure cannot cope with the demand). On the other hand, the transparency to end users is offered through the hybrid template functionality: the same VM template in OpenNebula can describe the VM if it is deployed locally and also if it gets deployed in Amazon EC2. So users just have to instantiate the template, and OpenNebula will transparently chose if that is executed locally or remotely. Very convenient, isn’t it?

Are you likely to increase your business technology investment next year? If you are, then you’re not alone. Worldwide ICT spending is expected to accelerate in 2014, after dipping to its slowest pace of growth since the financial crisis in 2013, according to the latest market study by International Data Corporation (IDC).
Overall business technology spending is on course to increase by 4 percent this year at constant currency, reaching $2.04 trillion — that’s down from last year’s growth of 5 percent, due mainly to the slowdown in key emerging markets including China and Russia.
IDC forecasts that in 2014, a rebound in China and continued momentum in the U.S. and Europe will see a return to overall industry growth of more than 5 percent (reaching $2.14 trillion).

With Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) firmly built into how enterprise IT operates, Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) seems a distant third for how big businesses are accessing cloud.

But should that be the case?

When we think of PaaS, you typically think of smaller companies starting up applications in the cloud. However, PaaS has a role to play in companies at scale.

According to Joe McKendrick:

“In a recent survey of 262 enterprises I helped conduct as part of my work with Unisphere Research (and sponsored by Oracle), we found that PaaS is now prevalent among one-fifth of public cloud adopters and half of private cloud sites. Among oublic cloud adopters, PaaS adoption has jumped from 18% to 20% since 2010. This is much higher for larger organizations in the survey — those with 5,000 or more employees — with 31% report adopting PaaS.”

Why is PaaS playing so well in the enterprise …

The negative press surrounding the cloud computing industry following the NSA PRISM leaks in June wasn’t a huge surprise.

But there are usually winners and losers in every situation – and Swiss cloud service providers stand to gain the most from the scandal.

Due to the country’s more stringent data privacy laws – a formal request from a prosecutor would have to be sent off before a CSP allows access to data in Switzerland – those at the eye of the storm are experiencing greater uptake.

Artmotion, based in Zurich, is one of these companies: in the month following the scandal, revenue went up 45%.

But as CEO Mateo Meier (left) points out, the advantages of storing data in Switzerland have been there from day one.
