Delivering Value Through Applications
“Hybrid clouds offer users the opportunity to deploy application workloads in environments that best meet requirements for compliance, performance, or cost,” noted Bernard Golden, Vice President of Strategy at ActiveState, in this exclusive Q&A with Cloud Expo Conference and Tech Chairs Larry Carvalho and Vanessa Alvarez. “The key challenge to truly achieving the best outcomes from hybrid cloud computing involve mapping dissimilar APIs, operations, services, and pricing.”
Cloud Computing Journal: How are cloud standards playing a role in expanding adoption among users? Are standards helping new business models for service providers?
Bernard Golden: To date, standards promulgated by official bodies have not played much role in cloud computing due to the rapid evolution of the market and offerings. However, de facto standards based on wide adoption or consortia are having a significant effect on the market and allowing users to have more confidence in their choices. Examples of de facto standards include the AWS API for cloud interaction, the OpenStack IaaS open source project for resource orchestration, and the CloudFoundry open source project for application development and deployment.
Infor Acquires GRASP Systems International
Infor on Tuesday announced the completed acquisition of substantially all of the assets of Colorado-based GRASP Systems International, Inc. (“GRASP”), a leading provider of automated patient acuity, workload management, patient assignment systems and consulting services to healthcare organizations in the U.S. and Canada. GRASP’s strong analytics and reporting capabilities will help Infor address the current cost-crisis occurring in healthcare, and deepen the Infor Healthcare suite by providing another leading solution to the market.
“This acquisition will add value to our existing development efforts for Infor Workforce Management for Healthcare by leveraging information from Infor Cloverleaf and real-time analytics from Infor Care Path Optimization,” said Duncan Angove, president, Infor. “Adding this functionality will enable health systems to go deeper than ever in understanding how staff resources are used in patient care and the costs associated at the patient procedure level to predict not only patient staffing needs based upon patient diagnoses, but also cost while benchmarking against their peers.”
Disruptive Web Innovation
Forgotten in the outcry over the NSA snooping on people’s online activities is that our favorite websites and online marketers do the same thing every day. However, profiling, tracking and third-party leaks will soon be tools of the past. Re2You is re-imagining how we use the Internet. This new cloud OS creates a dynamic, drag-and-drop interface for an entirely new and secure, privacy respecting Web experience—as well as cookie free new marketing opportunities.
A very simple idea actually, but broadly effecting every side of internet use, privacy, marketing, interface, the whole nine yards: Re2You’s software creates an abstraction layer that not only lets users drag and drop content from Web applications and online services, but also provides a wealth of secure data that is only made available with the user’s permission.

From MSPs to the cloud: Understanding the links
A study that took place last year predicted the managed services provider (MSP) market to nearly double over the next five years. The study, by research and consulting firm MarketsandMarkets, forecast a jump in the market from $142.75 billion in 2013 to $256.05 billion in 2018. The study includes managed data centers, networks, mobility, infrastructure, communications, security and other areas in the managed services market.
This study seems to fly in the face of many who predict negative effects on MSPs from the growth of cloud computing. However, there are signs of an emerging symbiotic relationship where both MSPs and cloud-based services are growing in lockstep.
The core problem that MSPs solve is the ability to outsource some or all of an enterprise’s IT operations to service providers that allow more direct control over the infrastructure and application services. While all MSPs differ in how they provide …

Teaching an Old Dog New Tricks: Blending Cloud and Desktop Applications
In 2013, Adobe took the bold step of moving from a perpetual licensing model to a subscription-based model to sell its creative software. The world is becoming more connected, collaborative and mobile, and Adobe wanted to make the shift to meet those needs. The process began in 2012 when Adobe launched the first phase of Creative Cloud, which provided Adobe’s full set of creative applications as a membership. In the year since, Adobe built the infrastructure to store and share files in the cloud, and acquired Behance, a thriving social network used by millions of people to connect, showcase their work, and discover other talent. For users, there is a blending of sorts of cloud computing and desktop applications: Customers will continue to install and use the creative applications on their desktop just as they always have, but the apps will increasingly be part of a larger creative process centered on Creative Cloud.
