It’s official: virtualisation has made it. On the Gartner Hype Cycle for Cloud Services, it has scaled the “peak of inflated expectations”, traversed the “trough of disillusionment” and is inches from the much coveted “plateau of productivity”.
For now, it remains on the “slope of enlightenment” — but it’s a technology right on the cusp of an evolution that will expand its influence further than ever.
The core concept of virtualisation, and its promise to increase efficiency by severing the link between hardware and software, has become common in informed businesses. Indeed, there’s now a huge range of examples, among a broad set of industries that demonstrate how to quickly take advantage of it and hit the ground running.
However, exploiting its full potential is not always trivial. Some of the larger and more enthusiastic businesses out there have the resources and expertise to write their own tools …
In September, the NCOIC delivered the Geospatial Community Cloud (GCC) demonstration. Sponsored by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, this demonstration showed how an interoperable, hybrid-cloud operating environment can be quickly enabled and used as a rapid response capability. While this demonstration was designed around lessons learned in the 2010 Haitian Earthquake, the effort showed how a cloud services brokerage approach could be used to quickly provide critical information technology infrastructure support to an unplanned event.

“We’re here to remind people that the little thing called the Internet is something that you should be dealing with essentially, especially as you’re deploying an application and you have users who are trying to access it globally,” observed Gary Ballabio, Product Line Director responsible for Akamai’s Enterprise Cloud Solutions portfolio, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at the 13th International Cloud Expo®, held Nov 4–7, 2013, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.

The NCOIC is an international organization for accelerating the global implementation of network centric principles and systems–to improve information sharing among various communities of interest for the betterment of their productivity, interactivity, safety, and security. The NCOIC Rapid Response Capability (NRRC) video series supports that mission by broadly disseminating information about the GCC demonstration for the good of the global community.

Identity Management (IDaaS) & Access Mgmt (SSO) solve similar but separate issues, but both serve as a cornerstone of an integrated security initiative.
One of the biggest misconceptions in cloud security is the perception that identity management (IDaaS) and access management (SSO) are the same thing.
They’re not.
And it took a viewing of the famous Star Trek episode called Mirror Mirror for me to best illustrate and articulate the difference between the creation and management of a user account and credentialed rights and the funneled applications that entity is allowed to see. For those unfamiliar with the episode, it’s the one where Kirk is transported into an alternate universe and meets evil Spock (the one with the beard)…but more about that soon.
IBM has signed an agreement with Dexia and several major financial institutions in Europe to build and manage their IT infrastructure previously managed by Associated Dexia Technology Services (ADTS). As a result of this agreement, IBM takes a controlling share in ADTS establishing an IBM company, renamed as Innovative Solutions for Finance (ISFF), with signed sourcing contracts at a total value of 1.3 billion US Dollars over seven years. With this agreement, IBM will implement a cloud infrastructure to expand ISFF services into new markets and optimize the efficiency of its existing information technology management.
