Global Outlook for 2014 Business Technology Investment
Are you likely to increase your business technology investment next year? If you are, then you’re not alone. Worldwide ICT spending is expected to accelerate in 2014, after dipping to its slowest pace of growth since the financial crisis in 2013, according to the latest market study by International Data Corporation (IDC).
Overall business technology spending is on course to increase by 4 percent this year at constant currency, reaching $2.04 trillion — that’s down from last year’s growth of 5 percent, due mainly to the slowdown in key emerging markets including China and Russia.
IDC forecasts that in 2014, a rebound in China and continued momentum in the U.S. and Europe will see a return to overall industry growth of more than 5 percent (reaching $2.14 trillion).
SOA Software Announces SOA & API Intermediation for Microsoft Environments
SOA Software is adding a new product, Intermediary for Microsoft, to its portfolio for Microsoft-based APIs and SOA services. Built entirely on the Microsoft platform, the Intermediary for Microsoft runs as an independent network management point and acts as an SOA and API intermediary between front end mobile, cloud, and portal applications, and backend Microsoft resources. The new product lets customers virtualize their Microsoft services environment, adding powerful new features to their API and SOA services such as Windows security, NET.TCP mediation, and dynamic routing without having to write new code or modify their existing infrastructure.
Can the enterprise afford to pass up PaaS?
With Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) firmly built into how enterprise IT operates, Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) seems a distant third for how big businesses are accessing cloud.
But should that be the case?
When we think of PaaS, you typically think of smaller companies starting up applications in the cloud. However, PaaS has a role to play in companies at scale.
According to Joe McKendrick:
“In a recent survey of 262 enterprises I helped conduct as part of my work with Unisphere Research (and sponsored by Oracle), we found that PaaS is now prevalent among one-fifth of public cloud adopters and half of private cloud sites. Among oublic cloud adopters, PaaS adoption has jumped from 18% to 20% since 2010. This is much higher for larger organizations in the survey — those with 5,000 or more employees — with 31% report adopting PaaS.”
Why is PaaS playing so well in the enterprise …
Artmotion CEO Mateo Meier on security, storage and a Swiss Cloud
The negative press surrounding the cloud computing industry following the NSA PRISM leaks in June wasn’t a huge surprise.
But there are usually winners and losers in every situation – and Swiss cloud service providers stand to gain the most from the scandal.
Due to the country’s more stringent data privacy laws – a formal request from a prosecutor would have to be sent off before a CSP allows access to data in Switzerland – those at the eye of the storm are experiencing greater uptake.
Artmotion, based in Zurich, is one of these companies: in the month following the scandal, revenue went up 45%.
But as CEO Mateo Meier (left) points out, the advantages of storing data in Switzerland have been there from day one.
“Most companies ask themselves about the level of risk when it comes to the discussion where to store their data,” Meier tells CloudTech in an …

MeriTalk Study: PaaS Could Help Reduce Federal IT Costs by $20.5B
Public-private partnership MeriTalk has released findings of a new study showing that platform-as-a-service models could help federal agencies reduce information technology costs by $20.5 billion.
The “PaaS or Play? Cloud’s Next Move” study was underwritten by Red Hat and found that PaaS services could help shorten the time it takes to develop applications by 31 percent, MeriTalk said Wednesday.
The potential cost savings represent 25 percent of the federal IT spending.
Ninety-five percent of feds say their agencies could reduce costs and bolster security infrastructures through PaaS migration and 71 percent are either mulling transitioning to that platform or are already leading towards that direction

Six Characteristics of Best-in-Class Object Storage
The adoption of cloud storage technology for a broad range of consumer and business applications is transforming the storage landscape by transitioning away from traditional disk arrays to object-based storage systems that have the scalability, availability, resiliency and accessibility to enable cloud-scale storage and instant access.
A recent IDC report predicts that the market for File- and Object-Based Storage (FOBS) will experience an annual growth rate of 24.5% through 2017, reaching $38 billion. “Increased versatility will result in more diverse use cases for FOBS,” said IDC.
