Windows Server 2003 End of Life Is Coming – Are You Ready? [Survey]
In case you haven’t heard, Microsoft has announced that the end of life (EOL) for Windows Server 2003 is July 14, 2015. If you’re wondering what this means for you, it comes down to this – there will be no patches or security updates, putting your applications and business at risk. New threats won’t be addressed and your WS2003 systems will become a security risk and compliance nightmare. In a recent blog post, Microsoft warns us to “watch out for performance bottlenecks,” but that’s the least of the worry. Do you have a plan in place to protect yourself (i.e., your job?)
The Industrial Internet and SMAC – Social, Mobile, Analytics and Cloud
The Industrial Internet refers to the world of connected sensors on people, equipment, machines, parts, assets, vehicles, inventory, etc. These items are connected by embedded wireless chips that monitor sensors and wirelessly send data to a server somewhere in the world. Here is an example of how one of the largest companies in the world is utilizing the industrial Internet.
Every major part of a GE jet engine, locomotive or turbine is equipped with wireless sensors that continuously measure and wirelessly send every aspect of performance to a central server that is often in the cloud. As the data is received by the server, it is analyzed by big data analytical solutions and the results are used to improve everything from the flight path to energy efficiency.

Welcome Move from Google to MariaDB
This past week The Register reported that Google is migrating a thousand plus instances of MySQL to MariaDB. At Parallels we made the decision about six months ago to release the newest version of our popular Parallels Plesk Panel with support for MariaDB. Parallels Plesk Panel, used for web hosting and management, is now running on over 270,000 servers world-wide and the MariaDB support in Parallels Plesk Panel 11.5 has helped drive growth and adoption over the past few months. We are a strong supporter of the MariaDB Foundation and applaud Google’s move which, along with RedHat’s announcement earlier this year, further validates MariaDB market momentum. It is a healthy reaction to Oracle’s control of MySQL and the moves they have made to limit community involvement.

Online Storage Provider Nirvanix Reportedly Two Weeks From Shutdown
According to a report today in Information Age:
“US-based cloud storage provider Nirvanix tells employees it has “gone to the wall”, gives customers until the end of the month to move their data elsewhere .”
The company was founded in 2007 after an online storage company called StreamLoad split into consumer and business units. Not longer after, the consumer arm – MediaMax – gave customers one month to relocate their data following a botched migration onto the Nirvanix platform.
