Had a short but interesting twitter exchange with @securityincite @Gillis57 and @essobi \u200f(Mike Rothman, Gillis Jones and not sure (sorry!!) respectively) about using Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt when talking IT security services. @Gillis57 initially asked, \u2018Question: We discuss FUD constantly (and I agree that it\u2019s too prominent) But isn\u2019t security inherently built upon fear?\u2019 I sent an \u201809 Rothman article (@securityincite said it was \u2018old school\u2019 but still has some great comments)about that very topic. Soon, @essobi chimed in with, \u2018Our foundation shouldn\u2019t be fear, it should be education. \ud83d\ude00 ,\u2019 @Gillis57 responded, \u2018So, look. I agree wholeheartedly, but why do people need to be educated?\u2019 @essobi answered, \u2018imo? Bad programming\/exploitable logic processes. we need to raise the bar or lower expectations.\u2019 @Gillis57 added, \u2018I really don\u2019t think we need to keep selling fear, but denying that we are a fear based industry isn\u2019t helping.\u2019 @securityincite wizdom\u2019d with, \u2018Fear is a tactic like anything else. Depends in situation, context, catalyst. And use sparingly.\u2019 And I conceded that, \u2018splitting hairs but I try to talk about risk rather than fear – what\u2019s the risk if\u2026which often generates fear.\u2019 <\/p>\n
