A handful of household names pursued <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/mergers-and-acquisitions\"  data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/mergers-and-acquisitions\">mergers, acquisitions, spin-offs and strategical overhauls<\/a>, with many striving to become a stronger force on the world stage. Other deals, meanwhile, became mired in regulatory issues.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/facebook\"  data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/facebook\">Facebook<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/tags\/intel\"  data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/tags\/intel\">Intel<\/a>, and from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/microsoft\"  data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/microsoft\">Microsoft<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/tags\/salesforce\"  data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/tags\/salesforce\">Salesforce<\/a>, 2021\u2019s most significant industry moves will have repercussions for years to come. We look back at a handful of the loudest to examine why these moves were so important, and what each one means for the future of the industry.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Intel launches $20 billion manufacturing roadmap\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"file-8226\" class=\"file file-image file-image-jpeg file-content-full-width\">\n<div class=\"content\">    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn1.cloudpro.co.uk\/sites\/cloudprod7\/files\/styles\/insert_main_wide_image\/public\/2021\/12\/credit_jane_mccallion_dennis_publishing_pat_gelsinger_vmware_vmworld_europe_2017.jpg?itok=70BZhED9\" alt=\"\" \/>  <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/hardware\/components\/359002\/intel-unveils-20-billion-plan-to-revitalise-its-business\"  data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/hardware\/components\/359002\/intel-unveils-20-billion-plan-to-revitalise-its-business\">Intel announced in March it was to invest $20 billion<\/a> into two new Arizona factories, the US chipmaker\u2019s CEO, Pat <span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"Gelsinger\" data-wsc-lang=\"en_GB\" data-wsc-id=\"kxagl5su9bj1aldzr\">Gelsinger<\/span>, described it as \u201csetting a course for a new era of innovation and product leadership\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/hardware\/components\/359998\/how-will-the-semiconductor-chip-shortage-affect-enterprise-it\"  data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/hardware\/components\/359998\/how-will-the-semiconductor-chip-shortage-affect-enterprise-it\">continued chip shortage<\/a> has wreaked havoc on the production of everything, from laptops, smartphones and tablets to gaming consoles and even cars. Boosting manufacturing capacity and economies of scale seem a natural response to that, assuming Intel can get hold of enough of the necessary raw materials, given the global supply chain crunch. The sector, of course, has also been hit by an increase in the price of copper.<\/p>\n<p>The launch of Intel Foundry Services (IFS), which aims to make the company a major provider of foundry capacity in the US and Europe, is also a key factor, given its plan to make custom chips for tech firms and national governments.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Where\u2019s the strategic value?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The pandemic hugely increased demand for technology that could power the massive remote working shift across the world. Chipmakers will be instrumental to that change and need to be ready and flexible to take advantage. Intel is in a tight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/business\/business-operations\/356395\/nvidia-overtakes-intel-as-most-valuable-us-chipmaker\"  data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/business\/business-operations\/356395\/nvidia-overtakes-intel-as-most-valuable-us-chipmaker\">race for supremacy with Nvidia<\/a>, and also needs to compete with the likes of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (<span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"TSMC\" data-wsc-lang=\"en_GB\" data-wsc-id=\"kxagl67l7eahonhlb\">TSMC<\/span>) and Samsung. In light of geopolitical tensions, this move is, in part, a bid to ensure more is made in the US.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.semiconductors.org\/turning-the-tide-for-semiconductor-manufacturing-in-the-u-s\/\"  data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.semiconductors.org\/turning-the-tide-for-semiconductor-manufacturing-in-the-u-s\/\">Semiconductor Industry Association<\/a>, US-based fabs account for just 12% of the world\u2019s manufacturing, down from 37% in 1990. There are also restrictions and sanctions on China\u2019s largest chip manufacturer, Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (<span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"SMIC\" data-wsc-lang=\"en_GB\" data-wsc-id=\"kxagl6amcpg33ir37\">SMIC<\/span>), put in place by the US Department of Commerce. In mid-December, Intel also announced it will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/intel-invest-7-bln-new-plant-malaysia-creating-9000-jobs-2021-12-16\/\"  data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/intel-invest-7-bln-new-plant-malaysia-creating-9000-jobs-2021-12-16\/\">invest more than $7 billion<\/a>\u00a0to develop a new chip-packaging and testing factory in Malaysia.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Salesforce bets big on collaboration with $27.7 billion Slack acquisition<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"file-8227\" class=\"file file-image file-image-jpeg file-content-full-width\">\n<div class=\"content\">    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn1.cloudpro.co.uk\/sites\/cloudprod7\/files\/styles\/insert_main_wide_image\/public\/2021\/12\/slack_salesforceapps_shutterstock_0.jpg?itok=Gz7-WKzc\" alt=\"\" \/>  <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As we entered 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/business-strategy\/mergers-and-acquisitions\/357962\/salesforce-buys-slack-official\"  data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/business-strategy\/mergers-and-acquisitions\/357962\/salesforce-buys-slack-official\">Salesforce announced it would acquire Slack<\/a>, the popular workplace collaboration platform with <a href=\"https:\/\/slack.com\/intl\/en-gb\/blog\/news\/slack-has-10-million-daily-active-users\"  data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/slack.com\/intl\/en-gb\/blog\/news\/slack-has-10-million-daily-active-users\">more than 10 million active users daily<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Marc <span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"Benioff\u2019s\" data-wsc-lang=\"en_GB\" data-wsc-id=\"kxagm153xofni123y\">Benioff\u2019s<\/span> software giant, whose customer relationship management (<span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"CRM\" data-wsc-lang=\"en_GB\" data-wsc-id=\"kxagm153l68orl6qo\">CRM<\/span>) platform is used by 150,000 companies, heralded it as a \u201cmatch made in heaven\u201d while Slack CEO Stewart Butterfield hailed the \u201cmost strategic combination in the history of software\u201d.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Where\u2019s the strategic value?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The world of work is changing beyond all recognition thanks to remote working and greater flexibility \u2013 and that means <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/business-strategy\/collaboration\/358819\/a-new-age-of-collaboration-tools\"  data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/business-strategy\/collaboration\/358819\/a-new-age-of-collaboration-tools\">workplace collaboration<\/a> software will be critical to productivity and growth.<\/p>\n<p>Joining forces <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/business-strategy\/collaboration\/360317\/salesforce-slack-acquisition-what-happens-next\"  data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/business-strategy\/collaboration\/360317\/salesforce-slack-acquisition-what-happens-next\">gives both Salesforce and Slack much greater capacity to compete<\/a> against the likes of Microsoft Teams and Facebook Workplace, offering the sort of software and functionality that would prove complementary to each of its customer bases.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Nvidia and Arm\u2019s $40 billion bid to own the age of AI<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"file-8228\" class=\"file file-image file-image-jpeg file-content-full-width\">\n<div class=\"content\">    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn2.cloudpro.co.uk\/sites\/cloudprod7\/files\/styles\/insert_main_wide_image\/public\/2021\/12\/nvidiamagnifyingglass_shutterstock.jpg?itok=5cxB3aMB\" alt=\"\" \/>  <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Combining a company with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/ai-news\/what-is-ai\"  data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/ai-news\/what-is-ai\">artificial intelligence (AI)<\/a> strength of Nvidia with the semiconductor prowess of Arm seems a no-<span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"brainer\" data-wsc-lang=\"en_GB\" data-wsc-id=\"kxagm182mbazsmau3\">brainer<\/span>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When the deal was announced in September 2020, Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia, said: \u201cIn the years ahead, trillions of computers running AI will create a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/cloud-computing\/28037\/what-is-iot\"  data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/cloud-computing\/28037\/what-is-iot\">Internet of Things (IoT)<\/a> that is thousands of times larger than today\u2019s <span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"internet\" data-wsc-lang=\"en_GB\" data-wsc-id=\"kxagm1b2j7y2fkios\">internet<\/span> of people. Our combination will create a company fabulously positioned for the age of AI.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The move hasn\u2019t panned out as either company will have hoped, however, and has since been endangered by a thorough regulatory process in the UK.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Where\u2019s the strategic value?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As Huang pointed out, the value lies in the future, with technology set to become more connected than ever. In the coming years, smart devices and appliances will become the norm, while sensors will power smarter cities, using AI alongside the wealth of data they gather from the likes of shops, roads, buildings, and factories to drive both government and business decision-making and direction.<\/p>\n<p>Given the size and scope of the deal, however, 2021 has seen it attract a continued amount of regulatory scrutiny. The UK has put Cambridge-based Arm under the spotlight due to fears over competition and national security. It was also announced in December 2021 how the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/us-watchdog-seeks-to-block-40bn-takeover-of-uks-arm-holdings-by-americas-nvidia-12484947\"  data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/us-watchdog-seeks-to-block-40bn-takeover-of-uks-arm-holdings-by-americas-nvidia-12484947\">Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is also seeking to block the takeover<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>IBM officially launches <span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"Kyndryl\" data-wsc-lang=\"en_GB\" data-wsc-id=\"kxagm1io5e5rnavlr\">Kyndryl<\/span> spin-off<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"file-8229\" class=\"file file-image file-image-jpeg file-content-full-width\">\n<div class=\"content\">    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn2.cloudpro.co.uk\/sites\/cloudprod7\/files\/styles\/insert_main_wide_image\/public\/2021\/12\/ibm_shutterstock.jpg?itok=X1Srlvhz\" alt=\"\" \/>  <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In November, IT services firm <span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"Kyndryl\" data-wsc-lang=\"en_GB\" data-wsc-id=\"kxagm1lqtgxrzvwl1\">Kyndryl<\/span> completed its spin-off from IBM. Alastair Edwards, chief analyst for channels analysis at <span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"Canalys\" data-wsc-lang=\"en_GB\" data-wsc-id=\"kxagm1lp02ul3nolf\">Canalys<\/span>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelpro.co.uk\/advice\/12339\/could-ibms-kyndryl-spin-off-cause-confusion\"  data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.channelpro.co.uk\/advice\/12339\/could-ibms-kyndryl-spin-off-cause-confusion\">told <em>Channel Pro<\/em><\/a> how removing the IBM shackles would allow it to work with a broader range of technology vendors. This would allow <span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"Kyndryl\" data-wsc-lang=\"en_GB\" data-wsc-id=\"kxagm1orqbi0o62br\">Kyndryl<\/span> to enjoy \u201cthe agility to focus on what they\u2019re really interested in, which is obviously cloud, AI, and other technology areas that they\u2019re doubling down on\u201d.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Where\u2019s the strategic value?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The true value of the spin-off remains to be seen. Experts suggest, though, <span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"Kyndryl\" data-wsc-lang=\"en_GB\" data-wsc-id=\"kxagm1rr6vbylpqqk\">Kyndryl<\/span> will face fierce competition from managed cloud service providers. By focusing on its specialisms, however, it could carve out a newer niche and premium role for itself.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/widget.spreaker.com\/player?episode_id=44145074&amp;theme=dark&amp;playlist=false&amp;playlist-continuous=false&amp;autoplay=false&amp;live-autoplay=false&amp;chapters-image=true&amp;episode_image_position=right&amp;hide-logo=false&amp;hide-likes=true&amp;hide-comments=true&amp;hide-sharing=true&amp;hide-download=true&amp;color=ffe019\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\nFor IBM, it represents a move away from its legacy as it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/cloud\/hybrid-cloud\/359528\/can-ibm-buy-its-way-to-cloud-success\"  data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/cloud\/hybrid-cloud\/359528\/can-ibm-buy-its-way-to-cloud-success\">focuses on the three pillars of AI, hybrid cloud and quantum computing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The $64 billion Dell-<span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"VMware\" data-wsc-lang=\"en_GB\" data-wsc-id=\"kxagm21lfspkvvdfd\">VMware<\/span> question<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"file-8230\" class=\"file file-image file-image-jpeg file-content-full-width\">\n<div class=\"content\">    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn1.cloudpro.co.uk\/sites\/cloudprod7\/files\/styles\/insert_main_wide_image\/public\/2021\/12\/vmware_shutterstock.jpg?itok=tVFvoJiB\" alt=\"\" \/>  <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Following the news that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/business-strategy\/mergers-and-acquisitions\/361420\/vmware-completes-64-billion-spin-off-from-dell\"  data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/business-strategy\/mergers-and-acquisitions\/361420\/vmware-completes-64-billion-spin-off-from-dell\">VMware would spin out from Dell<\/a> to create a standalone company, valued at approximately $64 billion, its CEO <span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"Raghu\" data-wsc-lang=\"en_GB\" data-wsc-id=\"kxagm24p6o8s99swg\">Raghu<\/span> <span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"Raghuram\" data-wsc-lang=\"en_GB\" data-wsc-id=\"kxagm24o6w6q6evo0\">Raghuram<\/span> explained: \u201cWe will continue to bring our multi-cloud strategy to life by providing our customers the power to accelerate their business and control their destiny in this new era.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is, of course, only the latest chapter in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/virtualisation\/29467\/vmware-ceo-we-have-partnerships-dell-isnt-comfortable-with\"  data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/virtualisation\/29467\/vmware-ceo-we-have-partnerships-dell-isnt-comfortable-with\">long saga of the relationship between Dell and VMware<\/a>, since Dell acquired <span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"EMC\" data-wsc-lang=\"en_GB\" data-wsc-id=\"kxagm27p0hxcc7bjr\">EMC<\/span> (which owned <span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"VMware\" data-wsc-lang=\"en_GB\" data-wsc-id=\"kxagm27o6das80dt6\">VMware<\/span>) in 2016.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Where\u2019s the strategic value?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>You could describe this November 2021 separation as a \u201cconscious uncoupling\u201d, an amicable breakup with a positive outcome for both. <span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"VMware\" data-wsc-lang=\"en_GB\" data-wsc-id=\"kxagm2aoymkn4d580\">VMware<\/span> and Dell will continue to provide \u201cdifferentiated solutions\u201d for their customers ensuring they are still strong apart. The move has benefited Dell as it has meant it received $9.3 billion to use to pay down debt, while <span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"VMware\" data-wsc-lang=\"en_GB\" data-wsc-id=\"kxagm2dr9fmosfmx2\">VMware<\/span> now has far more flexibility to partner with a greater number of cloud and on-premises infrastructure companies.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Facebook goes all &#8216;Meta&#8217;\u00a0on us<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"file-8231\" class=\"file file-image file-image-jpeg file-content-full-width\">\n<div class=\"content\">    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn2.cloudpro.co.uk\/sites\/cloudprod7\/files\/styles\/insert_main_wide_image\/public\/2021\/12\/vr_shutterstock.jpg?itok=mii63gjb\" alt=\"\" \/>  <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Facebook Company has come a long way since the social network site launched to the public in 2006. Alongside the platform we all know, the wider business now owns WhatsApp, Instagram, and Oculus.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To distance itself from the negative word association regarding its legacy name, in light of a string of scandals, data breaches and PR disasters, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/business\/business-strategy\/361396\/meta-industry-reacts-to-the-facebook-companys-rebrand\" >the umbrella company is now called Meta<\/a>. It\u2019s a similar move to when Google changed its parent company\u2019s name to Alphabet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meta was chosen as a title because, as we head into the future, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is pinning his hopes on the metaverse \u2013 an online world for people to inhabit 24\/7 using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/technology\/augmented-reality-ar\/361197\/immersive-tech-can-be-more-than-just-a-gimmick\" >Virtual Reality (VR)<\/a> headsets to work and have fun. Zuckerberg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-59083601\" >said, at the time of the announcement<\/a>: \u201cOver time, I hope that we are seen as a metaverse company and I want to anchor our work and our identity on what we&#8217;re building towards.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Where\u2019s the strategic value?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The names of Meta\u2019s individual brands aren\u2019t changing; they\u2019re far too well-known and ingrained in the psyche to mess with. Given the size of the business now, though, a new name and logo can help to cement a fresh identity in the future, especially for existing shareholders and future investors. It allows the business, too, to report on two different sides of its operations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The metaverse is a big strategic gamble and looks set to revolutionise the business world in the same way Facebook has influenced the nearly two billion daily active users it retains worldwide.
