{"id":42566,"date":"2021-11-08T09:59:20","date_gmt":"2021-11-08T09:59:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/icloud.pe\/blog\/?guid=97066983fce784490be43657e98f6152"},"modified":"2021-11-08T09:59:20","modified_gmt":"2021-11-08T09:59:20","slug":"microsoft-is-ending-onedrive-desktop-support-on-older-windows-versions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/icloud.pe\/blog\/microsoft-is-ending-onedrive-desktop-support-on-older-windows-versions\/","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft is ending OneDrive desktop support on older Windows versions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field-name-field-author field-type-node-reference field-label-hidden\"><br \/>\n      <span class=\"field-item even\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudpro.co.uk\/authors\/connor-jones\">Connor Jones<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n  <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"field field-name-field-published-date field-type-datetime field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\"><span class=\"date-display-single\">8 Nov, 2021<\/span><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"short-teaser\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudpro.co.uk\/\" title=\"\" class=\"combined-link\"><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body\">\n<p>Microsoft is ending support for the OneDrive desktop application for users of older Windows versions starting in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Updates for the personal version of the application will cease on 1 January 2022 for anyone still using Windows 7, 8, and 8.1.<\/p>\n<p><!--wysiwyg_see-related_plugin--><\/p>\n<p>\nMicrosoft suggests upgrading to a newer version of its operating system (OS) to keep the same secure experience, according to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/techcommunity.microsoft.com\/t5\/microsoft-onedrive-blog\/end-of-support-for-onedrive-desktop-application-on-windows-7-8\/ba-p\/2929066\">blog post making the announcement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/cloud-storage\/34661\/how-to-use-onedrive-a-guide-to-microsofts-cloud-storage-service\">OneDrive<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0business users will receive support for the desktop application aligned with the respective support lifecycles of the OS their devices run.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users will see extended support until 10 January 2023, while Windows 8 reached the end of support on 12 January 2016.<\/p>\n<p>All personal OneDrive\u00a0applications will stop syncing to the cloud on 1 March 2022 as Microsoft appears to be making the next step towards shifting its users to newer versions of Windows.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>All files stored locally on\u00a0the OneDrive desktop app will remain accessible in the app however, users will either have to upgrade to a newer OS or upload their files via OneDrive for web in order to sync files to the cloud.<\/p>\n<p>Mainstream support ended for Windows 8 in 2016, Windows 8.1 two years later in 2018, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/microsoft-windows\/32066\/what-to-do-if-youre-still-running-windows-7\">Windows 7 in 2020<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; the more popular of the three versions.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft announced earlier this year, ahead of the Windows 11 launch announcement, that Windows 10 will also be going &#8216;end of life&#8217; in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the most popular OS used worldwide, Windows 10 has just a few years of security updates left before the 14 October 2025 end date.<\/p>\n<p>Windows 11\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/operating-systems\/microsoft-windows\/360105\/windows-11-review\">launched on 5 October 2022<\/a>\u00a0with a new look and strong UI improvements, such as better window management.\u00a0Experts\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/operating-systems\/microsoft-windows\/361116\/windows-11-launches-business-uptake-slow\">said at the time\u00a0<\/a>there was a strong likelihood that businesses will be slow to adopt the new OS &#8211;
