The National Security Agency (NSA<\/a>) has awarded Amazon<\/a> a cloud computing contract codenamed \u2018WildandStormy\u2019<\/span> worth up to $10 billion, prompting an appeal from Microsoft<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Although the specific details of the contract are hidden, the NSA<\/span> is reportedly looking to move away from its on-premise environment as it looks to bring in commercial cloud<\/a> computing technology, according to Washington Technology<\/em><\/a>. The security agency is reportedly pursuing a \u201cHybrid Compute Initiative\u201d to see what data can be stored in a commercial cloud infrastructure<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Following the decision, Microsoft filed a protest<\/a> with the Government Accountability Office (GAO) on 21 July, claiming that the NSA<\/span> did not conduct a proper evaluation. The decision is expected back by 29 October.<\/p>\n

“NSA<\/span> recently awarded a contract for cloud computing services to support the Agency. The unsuccessful offerer has filed a protest with the Government Accountability Office. The Agency will respond to the protest in accordance with appropriate federal regulations,” an NSA<\/span> spokesperson told\u00a0IT Pro<\/em>.<\/p>\n

A Microsoft spokesperson told Nextgov<\/em><\/a> that the company was filing an administrative protest via the GAO. \u201cWe are exercising our legal rights and will do so carefully and responsibly,” said the spokesperson.<\/p>\n

IT Pro<\/em>\u00a0contacted Amazon for comment, which has referred any questions to the NSA<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Last July, the Department of Defense (DoD) cancelled a $10 billion Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI) project <\/a>and scrapped its Trump<\/a>-backed contract with Microsoft. The deal had been challenged by Microsoft\u2019s rival AWS<\/a>, which alleged that former president Donald Trump had influenced DoD<\/span> decisions during the bidding process in order to sabotage their chances.<\/p>\n

As a replacement for the JEDI project, the DoD<\/span> announced the Joint Warfighter<\/span> Cloud Capability (JWCC<\/span>), which is set to be \u201ca multi-cloud\/multi-vendor Indefinite Delivery-Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ<\/span>) contract\u201d that will consider both AWS<\/span> and Microsoft.
