Charlie Bell, one of Amazon\u2019s<\/a> top executives in its cloud<\/a> business, is leaving the company after 23 years.<\/p>\n

AWS<\/a> senior vice president Peter DeSantis<\/span>, who worked on global infrastructure<\/a>, is set to become the new leader for utility computing which Bell was managing, according to CNBC<\/em><\/a>. Prasad<\/span> Kalyanaraman<\/span>, a vice president at the company, will assume responsibility for infrastructure and network<\/a> services.<\/p>\n

Bell\u2019s departure is the latest in a string of high-level personnel moves at AWS<\/span>. Bell was reportedly considered a candidate to replace\u00a0AWS<\/span> CEO Andy Jassy<\/span> when he became Amazon CEO<\/a> last month, but\u00a0Tableau<\/a> CEO and former Amazon employee\u00a0Adam Selipsky was chosen instead<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Bell has been with the company since 1998 when his business, Server Technologies Group, was acquired by the company, according to his LinkedIn<\/a>. Before that, he was a manager at Oracle<\/a> between 1989 and 1996, and a space shuttle flight interface engineer at Boeing between 1979 and 1989.<\/p>\n

In a video posted by Amazon Science<\/em><\/a>, he revealed he started at the company when it was \u201cjust selling books\u201d. Bell initially led infrastructure before moving to the AWS<\/span> business in 2006 as it began developing core EC2<\/a> and S3<\/a> computing and storage services.<\/p>\n

In February, the head of AWS Andy Jassy was announced as the successor<\/a> to Jeff Bezos<\/span> – seen as a logical next step given Jassy<\/span> joined Amazon in 1997 and would go on to found AWS<\/span> in 2002.<\/p>\n

Following this, in March, Salesforce executive Adam Selipsky was appointed AWS CEO<\/a>. This saw Selipsky<\/span> return to AWS<\/span> after leaving the company in 2016 to become the CEO of Tableau. He spent the previous 11 years as AWS<\/span> vice president of sales, marketing and support.<\/p>\n

Selipsky\u2019s<\/span> time at Tableau saw the company\u2019s value quadruple as he led its move from licenses to subscriptions. It was eventually acquired by Salesforce<\/a> in 2019, where Selipsky<\/span> became a member of its executive leadership board in addition to his role as Tableau CEO. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
