{"id":42271,"date":"2021-07-14T08:28:28","date_gmt":"2021-07-14T08:28:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/icloud.pe\/blog\/?guid=8bb310941009db708864d8a07c42610c"},"modified":"2021-07-14T08:28:28","modified_gmt":"2021-07-14T08:28:28","slug":"google-cloud-customers-can-now-select-regions-based-on-co2-output","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/icloud.pe\/blog\/google-cloud-customers-can-now-select-regions-based-on-co2-output\/","title":{"rendered":"Google Cloud customers can now select regions based on CO2 output"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field-name-field-author field-type-node-reference field-label-hidden\"><br \/>\n      <span class=\"field-item even\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudpro.co.uk\/authors\/sabina-weston\">Sabina Weston<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n  <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"field field-name-field-published-date field-type-datetime field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\"><span class=\"date-display-single\">14 Jul, 2021<\/span><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"short-teaser\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudpro.co.uk\/\" title=\"\" class=\"combined-link\"><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/business-strategy\/mergers-and-acquisitions\/358634\/google-cloud-partners-with-databricks-for\">Google Cloud<\/a>\u00a0has announced an update to its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/server-storage\/data-centres\/356864\/irish-aws-data-centres-to-be-powered-by-100-renewable-energy\">data centre<\/a>\u00a0region picker that allows customers to reduce their carbon footprint by choosing a region based on its CO2 output.<\/p>\n<p>Starting today, Cloud Run and Datastream users will be able to find a region with the lowest carbon impact inside the Cloud Console location selectors, with the tool being rolled out to other Google Cloud offerings over time.<\/p>\n<p><!--wysiwyg_see-related_plugin--><\/p>\n<p>\nRegions will receive labels such as &#8220;Lowest CO2&#8221; or a leaf symbol, which means that the region has a carbon-free energy percentage of at least 75% or, in case this information is not available yet, a grid carbon intensity of no higher than 200 gCO2eq\/kWh.<\/p>\n<p>Grid carbon intensity is estimated based on average lifecycle gross emissions per unit of energy and is used to compare the regions in terms of carbon intensity. For instance, although Frankfurt and the Netherlands have similar CFE scores, the Netherlands has a higher emissions factor.<\/p>\n<p>The update is part of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/google\">Google<\/a>\u2019s company-wide sustainability initiative which aims to achieve\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/business\/business-strategy\/357093\/google-aims-to-go-carbon-free-by-2030\">carbon-free status by 2030<\/a>. The tech giant has been carbon-neutral since 2007.<\/p>\n<p>Besides\u00a0the region picker\u2019s Carbon footprint indicator, which was first previewed earlier this year and works by measuring the amount of carbon-free energy supply for each region, users can also filter regions based on cost as well as latency. The latter is estimated based on the physical distance between the customer\u2019s headquarters and the city or country of the data storage region.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the announcement, Carbon-free for Google Cloud Platform (GCP) product manager Steren Giannini said the tech giant wanted to empower its customers \u201cto make more sustainable decisions and progress with us towards this 24\/7 carbon-free future\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEarlier this year, we published the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.google.com\/sustainability\/region-carbon\">carbon characteristics of our Google Cloud regions<\/a>. Later, we introduced a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.withgoogle.com\/region-picker\/\">simple tool<\/a>\u00a0to help you pick a Google Cloud region, taking variables like price, latency and sustainability into account.
