The US Department of Defense (DoD) has cancelled its $10 billion (\u00a37.25bn) Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI) project and scrapped\u00a0its Trump-backed\u00a0contract with Microsoft<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The deal had been\u00a0long challenged<\/a>\u00a0by Microsoft\u2019s cloud rival Amazon Web Services\u00a0(AWS<\/a>), which alleged that then-president Donald Trump had influenced the DoD by ordering them to\u00a0\u201cscrew Amazon\u201d<\/a>, thus unfairly affecting the outcome of the bidding process.<\/p>\n

\nEarlier this year, the Pentagon hinted that it\u00a0might scrap JEDI<\/a>\u00a0altogether, with Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks\u00a0saying<\/a>\u00a0the DoD would have to consider the project in the context of Amazon\u2019s litigation.<\/p>\n

However, on Tuesday, acting\u00a0DoD CIO John Sherman<\/a>\u00a0said that the decision was due to the Pentagon\u2019s changing needs:<\/p>\n

“JEDI was developed at a time when the Department\u2019s needs were different and both the CSPs technology and our cloud conversancy was less mature. In light of new initiatives like JADC2 and AI and Data Acceleration (ADA), the evolution of the cloud ecosystem within DoD, and changes in user requirements to leverage multiple cloud environments to execute mission, our landscape has advanced and a new way-ahead is warranted to achieve dominance in both traditional and non-traditional warfighting domains,” he\u00a0said<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As a replacement for JEDI, the DoD announced a new project, known as the Joint Warfighter Cloud Capability (JWCC), which is to be \u201ca multi-cloud\/multi-vendor Indefinite Delivery-Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract\u201d that\u00a0will consider both AWS and Microsoft.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Department intends to seek proposals from a limited number of sources, namely the Microsoft Corporation (Microsoft<\/a>) and Amazon Web Services (AWS), as available market research indicates that these two vendors are the only Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) capable of meeting the Department\u2019s requirements,\u201d said the DoD.<\/p>\n

The first awards are expected to be announced by April 2022, according to Sherman, who wouldn\u2019t provide an estimated value \u201cyet\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wouldn’t latch onto the $10 billion figure,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Commenting on the news, Microsoft\u2019s president of US Regulated Industries, Toni Townes-Whitley,\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0that the tech giant is \u201cconfident\u201d that it will \u201ccontinue to be successful as the DoD selects partners for new work\u201d.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, AWS, headed by\u00a0new CEO Adam Selipsky<\/a>, told\u00a0Reuters<\/a><\/em>\u00a0that it looks \u201cforward to continuing to support the DoD\u2019s modernisation efforts and building solutions that help accomplish their critical missions\u201d. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
