Amazon, GitHub and the UK government’s online portal were among\u00a0countless websites taken offline\u00a0by the outage of\u00a0cloud computing<\/a>\u00a0provider\u00a0Fastly<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The outage, which started just before 11am on Tuesday,\u00a0impacted a variety of websites, ranging from governmental\u00a0portals and news outlets to IT and code-hosting services.<\/p>\n

\nAmong those which have been affected are payment websites\u00a0PayPal<\/a>\u00a0and Shopify, internet forums Quora and Reddit, streaming sites\u00a0Spotify<\/a>, Twitch, Hulu, HBO Max, and Vimeo, and developer portals\u00a0GitHub and Stack Overflow.<\/p>\n

The Fastly\u00a0outage has also taken down gov.uk, as well as numerous online newspapers and news outlets. These include\u00a0the New York Times, BBC, Financial Times, CNN, the Guardian, Bloomberg News<\/em>, and\u00a0The Verge<\/em>, with the latter opting to take its reporting onto Google Docs.<\/p>\n

The precise number of affected sites is at this time unknown. Fastly reportedly has\u00a02,084 paying customers<\/a>\u00a0who could all be impacted by the outage. The average Fastly customer reportedly spends $136,000 (\u00a396,125) per year.<\/p>\n

The gov.uk Twitter account stated that it’s “aware of the issues with\u00a0http:\/\/GOV.UK<\/a>\u00a0which means that users may not be able to access the site”.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“This is a wider issue affecting a number of other non-government sites. We are investigating this as a matter of urgency,” it added.<\/p>\n

On its status information site, Fastly described the issue as a “global CDN disruption”, noting that it’s “currently investigating potential impact to performance with our CDN services”. Fastly’s own website was also down, displaying an “I\/O error” message, while other websites showed a “503 error<\/a>“.<\/p>\n

At 11:44 am BST, the company announced that it had identified the issue and that “a fix [was] being implemented.<\/p>\n

A Fastly spokesperson told\u00a0IT Pro<\/em>\u00a0that the company\u00a0“identified a service configuration that triggered disruptions” across its POPs\u00a0“globally”\u00a0and has since “disabled that configuration”.<\/p>\n

“Our global network is coming back online,” they added.<\/p>\n

Gov.uk’s services were brought back shortly after Fastly’s announcement, and most of the affected sites appeared to come back online at around noon BST. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
