Google and\u00a0Microsoft<\/a>\u00a0reported surging profits on Tuesday as the two tech giants continued to capitalise on the COVID pandemic.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Alphabet, Google’s parent company,\u00a0posted<\/a>\u00a0first-quarter revenues of $55.31 billion, an increase of 34% year-on-year, and profits more than doubled to $17.93 billion, marking the third consecutive quarter of record profit for the company.<\/p>\n

\nSimilarly, Microsoft\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0that its revenues increased by 19% to $41.7 billion for the fiscal third quarter,\u00a0its biggest quarterly increase since 2018, while profits soared by 44% to $15.5 billion.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Google’s first-quarter\u00a0growth was largely fuelled by its advertising business, which brought in $44.68 billion during the three-month period – a 32% increase compared to Q1\u00a02020.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Google Cloud<\/a>\u00a0also reported impressive gains during the three-month period, although it continues to make a loss for the company. The division reported $4.02 billion in revenue and had an operating loss of $974 million in Q1,\u00a0compared to $3.83 billion in revenue and $1.24 billion in operating losses during Q4 2020,\u00a0the first time Google broke out its cloud business’ performance separately<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Alphabet’s “other bets,” which include\u00a0Verily<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Waymo<\/a>, reported revenue of $198 million and an operating loss $1.15 billion<\/p>\n

Our Cloud services are helping businesses, big and small, accelerate their\u00a0digital transformations<\/a>,” said Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Cloud remained\u00a0Microsoft’s biggest driver during its fiscal third quarter.\u00a0Sales of commercial cloud products generated $17.7 billion in revenue, up 33% from a year earlier, and\u00a0Azure<\/a>\u00a0revenues soared 50% during the three-month period.\u00a0Commercial\u00a0Office 365 products also grew 22% during Q3\u00a0as corporate customers continued to embrace cloud-based tools as a result of the shift to mass\u00a0remote working<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cOver a year into the pandemic, digital adoption curves aren\u2019t slowing down. They\u2019re accelerating, and it\u2019s just the beginning,\u201d said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. \u201cWe are building the cloud for the next decade, expanding our addressable market and innovating across every layer of the tech stack to help our customers be resilient and transform.\u201d<\/p>\n

Microsoft’s Personal Computing business also saw recorded growth of 19% year-on-year, thanks to a 10%\u00a0increase in\u00a0Windows<\/a>\u00a0OEM revenue, a 10% year-over-year increase in Windows commercial products and cloud services revenue, and a 35% jump in Xbox and gaming revenue. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
