The\u00a0global semiconductor shortage<\/a>\u00a0will last for at least another six months, according to\u00a0Cisco<\/a>\u00a0CEO Chuck Robbins.<\/p>\n

Robbins told\u00a0the\u00a0BBC<\/a><\/em>\u00a0that it would take \u201canother six months to get through the short term\u201d of the global chip shortage, adding that the crisis is unlikely to be fully resolved until\u00a02022.<\/p>\n

“The providers are building out more capacity. And that’ll get better and better over the next 12 to 18 months,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\nAccording to Robbins, the shortage has been caused by unprecedented demand for semiconductors, which \u201cgo in virtually everything\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen COVID hit, everyone thought that the demand side was going to decline significantly and in fact we saw the opposite,\u201d Robbins said. \u201cAnd at the same time demand went up instead which was a complete shock to so many of us.\u201d<\/p>\n

The UK\u2019s first national lockdown saw a massive\u00a0surge in demand for virtual office components<\/a>\u00a0such as\u00a0laptops<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0network peripherals as companies scrambled to accommodate their employees in the mass shift to\u00a0working from home<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Robbins\u2019 statement comes as the European Commissioner for Internal Market Thierry Breton announced plans to hold discussions with\u00a0Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0TSMC<\/a>\u00a0Europe president Maria Marced on 30 April.<\/p>\n

Breton is reportedly looking to secure the EU\u2019s role in chip production by persuading a leading chip manufacturer, most likely TSMC, to open a fabrication plant in the region, with France, Germany, or Poland mentioned as potential locations.<\/p>\n

Opening a major factory in Europe would help\u00a0the continent to become less reliant on shipments coming in from Asia, which has proven increasingly difficult due to pandemic travel and transport restrictions. Breton is seeking to double the EU\u2019s\u00a0share<\/a>\u00a0of global semiconductor production to 20%\u00a0by 2030.<\/p>\n

“Increasing our autonomy does not mean isolating ourselves in a world where supply chains are global,” Breton told\u00a0Reuters<\/em><\/a>. “In parallel to exploring how we can increase Europe’s capacity…we will continue to build bridges with international partners – but with us in the driving seat,” he added, confirming the meetings. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
