Although Amazon already manufactures its semiconductor switches in-house, their production is reliant on silicon supplied by San Jose, California-based company\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/hardware\/357001\/broadcom-faces-delays-over-chip-shipments\">Broadcom<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!--wysiwyg_see-related_plugin--><\/p>\n<p>\nIn April 2020, the chip manufacturer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-04-16\/broadcom-says-orders-require-six-months-notice-due-to-delays\">warned customers<\/a>\u00a0that they would be required to place their orders at least six months in advance, instead of the normal two to three months. Broadcom\u2019s VP of sales Nilesh Mistry said that this was due to \u201cunreliable\u201d transport options caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>It isn&#8217;t clear\u00a0whether Amazon\u2019s reported decision\u00a0to develop custom silicon chips for its hardware network switches\u00a0was influenced by this issue, but the move will likely make it easier for the tech giant to avoid\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/hardware\/358704\/president-biden-and-senator-schumer-ready-semiconductor-supply-chain-initiatives\">supply chain disruptions<\/a>\u00a0and have more control over its own infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon\u2019s in-house chip development will be made possible thanks to its 2015 acquisition of Israeli chip manufacturer Annapurna Labs, which the tech giant purchased for $350 million (\u00a3254 million).<\/p>\n<p>Israel is also set to be the base of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/server-storage\/system-on-chip-soc\/358986\/google-cloud-hires-intel-exec-to-ramp-up-in-house-chip\">Google Cloud\u2019s new server chip design division<\/a>.
