Last year, he was appointed corporate VP of Intel\u2019s Design Engineering Group but chose to leave the role earlier this month.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It has now been revealed that Frank has been hired by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/google\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/google\">Google<\/a> and appointed VP of Engineering for the tech giant\u2019s server chip design division which is to be based in Israel.<\/p>\n<p><!--wysiwyg_see-related_plugin--><\/p>\n<p>\nAnnouncing the move on his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/security\/357779\/people-cant-resist-opening-linkedin-phishing-emails\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/security\/357779\/people-cant-resist-opening-linkedin-phishing-emails\">LinkedIn<\/a> profile, Frank <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:6779764218351771648\/\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:6779764218351771648\/\">wrote<\/a> that he \u201clook[s] forward to growing a team here in Israel while accelerating Google Cloud\u2019s innovations in compute infrastructure\u201d, before adding that the tech giant is currently hiring system-on-a-chip (SOC) designers to join its growing sever chip team.<\/p>\n<p>Google Cloud\u2019s VP of Systems Infrastructure Amin Vahdat <a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.google.com\/blog\/topics\/systems\/the-past-present-and-future-of-custom-compute-at-google\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/cloud.google.com\/blog\/topics\/systems\/the-past-present-and-future-of-custom-compute-at-google\">said<\/a> that the company is \u201cthrilled to welcome Uri Frank as our VP of Engineering for server chip design\u201d, adding that Frank \u201cbrings nearly 25 years of custom CPU design and delivery experience\u201d that will help Google \u201cbuild a world-class team in Israel\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve long looked to Israel for novel technologies including Waze, Call Screen, flood forecasting, high-impact features in Search, and Velostrata\u2019s cloud migration tools, and we look forward to growing our presence in this global innovation hub,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p>Vahdat also elaborated on the company\u2019s decision to focus on in-house SoC design.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead of integrating components on a motherboard where they are separated by inches of wires, we are turning to \u201cSystems on Chip\u201d (SoC) designs where multiple functions sit on the same chip, or on multiple chips inside one package. In other words, the SoC is the new motherboard,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The decision to produce custom chips in-house as opposed to outsourcing follows similar moves from companies including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/cloud\/amazon-web-services-aws\/357766\/aws-ditches-nvidia-for-in-house-inferentia-silicon\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/cloud\/amazon-web-services-aws\/357766\/aws-ditches-nvidia-for-in-house-inferentia-silicon\">AWS<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/hardware\/laptops\/355417\/apple-planning-to-equip-macs-with-its-own-chips-beginning-in-2021\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/hardware\/laptops\/355417\/apple-planning-to-equip-macs-with-its-own-chips-beginning-in-2021\">Apple<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This trend has been largely influenced by the difficulties in fulfilling the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/server-storage\/data-centres\/355759\/data-centre-chip-demand-fuels-nvidia-q2-revenue\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/server-storage\/data-centres\/355759\/data-centre-chip-demand-fuels-nvidia-q2-revenue\">growing demand for chips<\/a>, which has resulted in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/hardware\/358605\/biden-pledges-to-address-the-growing-chip-crisis\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/hardware\/358605\/biden-pledges-to-address-the-growing-chip-crisis\">significant global shortage of components<\/a>.
