{"id":41890,"date":"2021-03-16T10:15:31","date_gmt":"2021-03-16T10:15:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/icloud.pe\/blog\/?guid=71736dac004f7ec5d698ddb8930a92c8"},"modified":"2021-03-16T10:15:31","modified_gmt":"2021-03-16T10:15:31","slug":"amd-epyc-milan-server-cpus-are-twice-as-fast-as-intel-xeon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/icloud.pe\/blog\/amd-epyc-milan-server-cpus-are-twice-as-fast-as-intel-xeon\/","title":{"rendered":"AMD Epyc Milan server CPUs are &#8220;twice as fast&#8221; as Intel Xeon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field-name-field-author field-type-node-reference field-label-hidden\"><br \/>\n      <span class=\"field-item even\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudpro.co.uk\/authors\/bobby-hellard\">Bobby Hellard<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n  <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"field field-name-field-published-date field-type-datetime field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\"><span class=\"date-display-single\">16 Mar, 2021<\/span><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"short-teaser\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudpro.co.uk\/\" title=\"\" class=\"combined-link\"><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body\">\n<p>AMD has unveiled its third-generation Epyc Milan data centre CPUs, which is claims are the &#8220;world&#8217;s fastest&#8221; server processors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The hardware, which is already available, is the first set of AMD chips for the server market to be built on the company&#8217;s powerful\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/hardware\/32695\/amd-goes-big-on-7nm-at-ces\" >7-nanometer<\/a>\u00a0Zen 3 architecture.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!--wysiwyg_see-related_plugin--><\/p>\n<p>\nAMD claims Epyc Milan\u00a0produces twice the power of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/hardware\/components\/354849\/intel-unveils-new-xeon-sp-5g-and-structured-asic-chips\" >Intel&#8217;s rival Xeon Cascade Lake Refresh chips<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/high-performance-computing-hpc\" >HPC<\/a>, cloud and enterprise workloads, and\u00a0claims it offers a better price-to-performance ratio.<\/p>\n<p>AMD&#8217;s confidence comes from as a result of its\u00a0Zen 3 architecture, which is a microarchitecture that has brought\u00a0similar benefits with AMD&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/hardware\/components\/356523\/amd-packs-integrated-graphics-into-new-ryzen-chips\" >Ryzen 500<\/a>\u00a0series of chips, which have become increasingly popular in the desktop PC space.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With the launch of our 3rd Gen AMD Epyc processors, we are incredibly excited to deliver the fastest server CPU in the world. These processors extend our data centre leadership and help customers solve today&#8217;s most complex IT challenges, while substantially growing our ecosystem,&#8221; said Forrest Norrod, senior vice president and general manager, Data Center and Embedded Solutions Business Group.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We not only double the performance over the competition in HPC, cloud and enterprise workloads with our newest server CPUs but together with the AMD Instinct GPUs, we are breaking the exascale barrier in supercomputing and helping to tackle problems that have previously been beyond humanity&#8217;s reach.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Zen 3&#8217; refers to cores of which there are 64 within the 7003 series that is said to deliver up to twice the performance for HPC workloads compared to the competition. For cloud providers that need more computing power and security, the 7003 series has the &#8220;highest core density&#8221;, according to AMD, and also includes AMD\u00a0Infinity Guard protection.<\/p>\n<p>Already, the AMD Epyc Milan\u00a0series is being used by some of the biggest names in tech in a variety of ways. AWS will add it to its core Amazon EC2 instance families later this year, and it will also feature in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/server-storage\/33538\/dell-set-to-triple-its-amd-server-offering\" >Dell<\/a>&#8216;s new PowerEdge XE8545 server.
