{"id":41479,"date":"2020-10-27T09:56:32","date_gmt":"2020-10-27T09:56:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/icloud.pe\/blog\/?guid=9c0f37e0616f4cec30ff6432a6ad1983"},"modified":"2020-10-27T09:56:32","modified_gmt":"2020-10-27T09:56:32","slug":"zoom-starts-rolling-out-end-to-end-encryption-for-all-users","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/icloud.pe\/blog\/zoom-starts-rolling-out-end-to-end-encryption-for-all-users\/","title":{"rendered":"Zoom starts rolling out end-to-end encryption for all users"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field-name-field-author field-type-node-reference field-label-hidden\"><br \/>\n      <span class=\"field-item even\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudpro.co.uk\/authors\/carly-page\">Carly Page<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n  <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"field field-name-field-published-date field-type-datetime field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\"><span class=\"date-display-single\">27 Oct, 2020<\/span><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"short-teaser\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudpro.co.uk\/\" title=\"\" class=\"combined-link\"><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body\">\n<p>Zoom has\u00a0started rolling out\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/security\/innovation-at-work\/24460\/what-is-data-encryption\" >end-to-end encryption<\/a>\u00a0(E2EE) to both free and paying users.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>E2EE is now available in technical preview on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudpro.co.uk\/collaboration\/8494\/zoom-admits-meetings-dont-use-end-to-end-encryption\" >Zoom<\/a>\u00a0desktop client version\u00a0for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/tags\/macos\" >macOS<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/windows-10\" >Windows<\/a>, the Zoom Android app and Zoom Rooms, with the Zoom iOS app currently pending App Store approval.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!--wysiwyg_see-related_plugin--><\/p>\n<p>\nZoom\u2019s E2EE uses\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/software\/video-conferencing\/355410\/zoom-50-adds-256-bit-encryption-and-ui-refresh\" >the same 256-bit AES-GCM encryption that secures Zoom meetings by default<\/a>. Account administrators can enable the feature in the web dashboard at an\u00a0account, group, and user level, and participants must also enable the feature to join a meeting with end-to-end encryption.<\/p>\n<p>When\u00a0E2EE is enabled, nobody\u00a0except each participant &#8211; not even Zoom\u2019s meeting servers &#8211;\u00a0has access to the encryption keys that are used to secure the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>However, the company\u00a0has warned that at least in the first stage of the four-phase rollout, E2EE will block certain Zoom functions, including cloud recording, streaming, live transcription, Breakout Rooms, polling, 1:1 private chat, and meeting reactions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnd-to-end encryption is another stride toward making Zoom the most secure communications platform in the world,\u201d said Zoom CEO Eric S. Yuan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis phase of our E2EE offering provides the same\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/security\" >security<\/a>\u00a0as existing end-to-end-encrypted messaging platforms, but with the video quality and scale that has made Zoom the communications solution of choice for hundreds of millions of people and the world\u2019s largest enterprises.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Phase 2 of the E2EE rollout is &#8220;tentatively roadmapped&#8221; for\u00a02021, according to Zoom.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The rollout of end-to-end encryption comes five months after Zoom initially announced plans to add support for the security standard. However,\u00a0at the time it said i<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/software\/video-conferencing\/355850\/zoom-to-strengthen-encryption-for-paid-accounts\" >t would only be available for businesses and institutions that pay for a premium Zoom subscription<\/a>.
