Twilio is rumoured to be planning an\u00a0acquisition of\u00a0customer relationship management (CRM<\/a>) startup Segment in a deal worth $3.2 billion (\u00a32.45 billion).\u00a0<\/p>\n

Twilio, which\u00a0currently\u00a0has a market cap of $43.83 billion, has agreed to buy Segment in a deal that could be officially announced as soon as this week, according to\u00a0Forbes<\/a>.<\/em>\u00a0The acquisition\u00a0would be Twilio’s largest\u00a0to date, following\u00a0its $2 billion takeover of SendGrid in 2018<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\nTwilio’s technology allows developers\u00a0to build software that can make and receive phone calls, send and receive text messages, and perform other communication functions using its web service\u00a0APIs<\/a>. The company, which\u00a0counts Twitter,\u00a0Uber<\/a>, and Amazon’s Twitch among its customers, has seen its stock price triple\u00a0since the beginning of the year\u00a0as companies rushed to modernise their apps and services during the\u00a0COVID-19<\/a>\u00a0pandemic.<\/p>\n

Segment, which boasts big-name customers including\u00a0VMware<\/a>, Trivago and\u00a0IBM<\/a>, provides a set of APIs to pull together customer data from a variety of sources, including CRM tools, customer service applications, and websites. However, the company hasn’t fared so well during the pandemic, with Segment laying off 10% of its 550 staff in May in anticipation of a “tougher IT spending environment”.<\/p>\n

However, the company said in September that it now has over 20,000 customers,\u00a0up from 19,000 at the time of the layoffs.<\/p>\n

It’s believed Twilio will use the acquisition to expand beyond its core communications capabilities to create customised ads or emails using data gathered using Segment’s technology.<\/p>\n

A Twilio spokesperson told\u00a0Forbes<\/em>\u00a0that it does not comment “on any rumors or speculation”, and Segment also declined to comment on the rumour. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
