{"id":41308,"date":"2020-09-04T11:27:43","date_gmt":"2020-09-04T11:27:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/icloud.pe\/blog\/?guid=ea717e57939df3fa62e0bc547cb7009d"},"modified":"2020-09-04T11:27:43","modified_gmt":"2020-09-04T11:27:43","slug":"digital-services-act-google-asks-european-commission-to-clarify-responsibilities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/icloud.pe\/blog\/digital-services-act-google-asks-european-commission-to-clarify-responsibilities\/","title":{"rendered":"Digital Services Act: Google asks European Commission to clarify responsibilities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field-name-field-author field-type-node-reference field-label-hidden\"><br \/>\n      <span class=\"field-item even\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudpro.co.uk\/authors\/sabina-weston\">Sabina Weston<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n  <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"field field-name-field-published-date field-type-datetime field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\"><span class=\"date-display-single\">4 Sep, 2020<\/span><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"short-teaser\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudpro.co.uk\/\" title=\"\" class=\"combined-link\"><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body\">\n<p><span data-cke-copybin-start=\"1\">\u200b<\/span>Google has responded to the European Commission\u2019s public consultation regarding the Digital Services Act, submitting a 135-page document which points out the need to clarify the EU\u2019s expectations towards tech companies.<\/p>\n<p>In the submission, Google urged the European Commission to avoid a &#8216;one-size-fits-all&#8217; approach, as well as elaborate on the responsibilities to which the tech industry will have to adhere\u00a0if the legislation is passed.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/policy-legislation\/34075\/eu-plotting-to-overhaul-rules-governing-tech-giants\">Digital Services Act<\/a>, which was first unveiled in 2019, is expected to provide the EU with a raft of legal powers to influence how social media platforms govern hate speech, extremist material, and political advertising.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The legislation would directly impact Google\u2019s video-hosting service YouTube, which has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/it-regulation\/29584\/eu-presses-tech-firms-to-eradicate-online-hate-speech\">criticised in the past<\/a>\u00a0for spreading harmful conspiracy theories, fake news, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/network-internet\/30205\/germany-enforces-law-that-will-fine-social-networks-if-they-dont-remove-hate\">hate speech<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the document submitted to the European Commission, Google agreed that tech companies should act fast in order to immediately remove or disable access to harmful or illegal content.
