In September 2014,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/2014\/09\/15\/minecraft-to-join-microsoft\/\"  class=\"polaris__link -is-external\" rel=\"noopener\">Microsoft announced its acquisition of Mojang<\/a><span>\u00a0for\u00a0<\/span><span>$2.5 billion (\u00a31.9bn).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Since then,\u00a0Minecraft has become one of the most popular games of all time, being played by 126 million people each month and selling over\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.xbox.com\/en-us\/2020\/05\/18\/minecraft-connecting-more-players-than-ever-before\/\"  class=\"polaris__link -is-external\" rel=\"noopener\">200 million copies<\/a><span>\u00a0as of May this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<p><!--wysiwyg_see-related_plugin--><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A Microsoft spokesperson\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/07\/20\/microsoft-minecraft-mojang-abandon-aws-for-azure.html\"  class=\"polaris__link -is-external\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>told\u00a0<em>CNBC<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0in an email that \u201cMojang Studios has used AWS in the past, but we\u2019ve been migrating all cloud services to Azure over the last few years\u201d, adding that Microsoft will be \u201cfully transitioned to Azure by the end of the year\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Microsoft\u2019s decision to stop relying on AWS is fuelled by the growing rivalry between the two tech giants. Although AWS is considered the leading provider of public cloud infrastructure, Microsoft\u2019s Azure has experienced growth huge growth, largely due to the skyrocketing demand for cloud services during the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent shift to remote working.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Last month, Microsoft\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/business-strategy\/data-insights\/356142\/microsoft-acquires-data-model-provider-adrm\" class=\"polaris__link\">acquired enterprise data modelling company ADRM Software<\/a>, aiming to combine the firm\u2019s \u201cinformation blueprints\u201d with Azure storage and compute to create sophisticated data lakes.
