Microsoft-owned\u00a0Minecraft\u00a0will stop using Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud and will shift its workloads to Azure.<\/span><\/p>\n

The tech giant has used AWS to run its popular Minecraft video game since 2014, when the game’s\u00a0original developer, Mojang Studios, chose AWS to run its Realms – virtual places where small groups can collaborate in playing the open-world game together. In September 2014,\u00a0<\/span>Microsoft announced its acquisition of Mojang<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0<\/span>$2.5 billion (\u00a31.9bn).<\/span><\/p>\n

Since then,\u00a0Minecraft has become one of the most popular games of all time, being played by 126 million people each month and selling over\u00a0<\/span>200 million copies<\/a>\u00a0as of May this year.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Microsoft spokesperson\u00a0<\/span>told\u00a0CNBC<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0in an email that \u201cMojang Studios has used AWS in the past, but we\u2019ve been migrating all cloud services to Azure over the last few years\u201d, adding that Microsoft will be \u201cfully transitioned to Azure by the end of the year\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Microsoft\u2019s decision to stop relying on AWS is fuelled by the growing rivalry between the two tech giants. Although AWS is considered the leading provider of public cloud infrastructure, Microsoft\u2019s Azure has experienced growth huge growth, largely due to the skyrocketing demand for cloud services during the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent shift to remote working.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last month, Microsoft\u00a0acquired enterprise data modelling company ADRM Software<\/a>, aiming to combine the firm\u2019s \u201cinformation blueprints\u201d with Azure storage and compute to create sophisticated data lakes. The company also\u00a0announced new features<\/a>\u00a0for its\u00a0<\/span>IoT<\/a>\u00a0platform, Azure Digital Twins.<\/span><\/p>\n

Prior to that, in late May, Microsoft also launched\u00a010\u00a0new Azure cloud services<\/a>, including Bastion and Confidential Computing, for its UK customer base in order to improve security and allow users to take advantage of technologies such as IoT.<\/span><\/p>\n

Microsoft\u2019s independence from AWS could not only save the company money, but\u00a0it also has the potential to communicate to its customers and rivals that Microsoft is confident in its own technology and does not have to rely on an industry-pioneer like Amazon in order to maintain its data storage.<\/span><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
