{"id":41030,"date":"2020-06-25T09:23:35","date_gmt":"2020-06-25T09:23:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/icloud.pe\/blog\/?guid=762e439655ddd76ff399f6a8dc277bb8"},"modified":"2020-06-25T09:23:35","modified_gmt":"2020-06-25T09:23:35","slug":"apples-arm-based-macs-wont-support-windows-virtualisation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/icloud.pe\/blog\/apples-arm-based-macs-wont-support-windows-virtualisation\/","title":{"rendered":"Apple&#8217;s ARM-based Macs won&#8217;t support Windows virtualisation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field-name-field-author field-type-node-reference field-label-hidden\"><br \/>\n      <span class=\"field-item even\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudpro.co.uk\/authors\/carly-page\">Carly Page<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n  <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"field field-name-field-published-date field-type-datetime field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\"><span class=\"date-display-single\">25 Jun, 2020<\/span><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"short-teaser\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudpro.co.uk\/\" title=\"\" class=\"combined-link\"><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body\">\n<p>Users will no longer be able to run Windows virtualisation software once they switch to Apple&#8217;s upcoming ARM-based Macs, it has emerged.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/developer.apple.com\/documentation\/apple_silicon\/about_the_rosetta_translation_environment\" >developer support documents<\/a>\u00a0published by Apple, the company confirmed that the switch from Intel to ARM-based processors will prevent users from running\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/operating-systems\/microsoft-windows\/356055\/how-to-run-windows-on-a-mac\" >Windows on the Mac<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--wysiwyg_see-related_plugin--><\/p>\n<p>\nIn the document, Apple confirmed\u00a0that Rosetta 2 \u2013\u00a0an emulation layer that will enable users to run old apps on new Mac devices \u2013\u00a0won&#8217;t be able to translate x86_64 virtualization apps, which could prevent the\u00a0virtualisation of Windows environments using apps such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudpro.co.uk\/parallels\" >Parallels<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudpro.co.uk\/vmware\" >VMWare<\/a>\u00a0Fusion.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Rosetta can translate most Intel-based apps, including apps that contain just-in-time (JIT) compilers,&#8221; the document reads. &#8220;However, Rosetta doesn\u2019t translate the following executables: kernel extensions,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/cloud\/virtual-machines\/355269\/getting-started-with-virtual-machines\" >Virtual Machine<\/a>\u00a0apps that virtualize x86_64 computer platforms.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In addition to these restrictions, Boot Camp, a popular tool that allows MacBook users to switch between Windows and macOS,\u00a0will no longer be available for use on devices powered by Apple Silicon.<\/p>\n<p>Although the\u00a0tool will remain in macOS Big Sur, it will be\u00a0an Intel-only feature.\u00a0Non-Intel Macs will not be able to access the tool and the company has not yet announced a replacement.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/microsoft\" >Microsoft<\/a>\u00a0confirmed that there\u2019s no official way to install the operating system, telling\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/6\/24\/21302213\/apple-silicon-mac-arm-windows-support-boot-camp\" >The Verge<\/a><\/em>\u00a0that it &#8220;only licences Windows on ARM to OEMs&#8221;.\u00a0When asked whether it plans to\u00a0change this policy to allow Boot Camp on ARM-based Macs, and the company said \u201cwe have nothing further to share at this time&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>It remains unclear whether virtualisation companies are working on a solution for ARM-based Macs, though VMWare on Tuesday announced that\u00a0Big Sur-compatible &#8220;tech preview&#8221;
