While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/software\/video-conferencing\/355229\/zoom-we-moved-too-fast\"  data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/software\/video-conferencing\/355229\/zoom-we-moved-too-fast\">the company and it&#8217;s CEO Eric Yuan<\/a>\u00a0have scrambled to patch the issues, its reputation is sinking fast.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the problem is that the company, like the rest of the world, didn&#8217;t expect a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/hardware\/354723\/coronavirus-starts-to-take-its-toll-on-the-tech-industry\"  data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/hardware\/354723\/coronavirus-starts-to-take-its-toll-on-the-tech-industry\">global pandemic<\/a> to force us all indoors. As such, videoconferencing services have become vital components of this new way of life, and Zoom is now one of the most popular. The app is simple to use and has a freemium option, which has seen a fairly big spike in enterprise usage \u2013\u00a0which is where the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/software\/video-conferencing\/355229\/zoom-we-moved-too-fast\"  data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/software\/video-conferencing\/355229\/zoom-we-moved-too-fast\">security issues are proving most concerning<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The two security issues that seem most concerning to businesses\u00a0are\u00a0&#8216;Zoom-bombing&#8217; and the lack of end-to-end encryption.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>Google<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/software\/video-conferencing\/355274\/google-bans-zoom-on-employee-laptops?_mout=1&amp;utm_campaign=itpro_newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=newsletter\"  data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/software\/video-conferencing\/355274\/google-bans-zoom-on-employee-laptops?_mout=1&amp;utm_campaign=itpro_newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=newsletter\">Google<\/a>\u00a0has reportedly issued a company-wide memo telling\u00a0employees who have the Zoom app on their work laptops that it will no longer work,\u00a0although they can still use it on mobiles for personal use, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/software\/video-conferencing\/355274\/google-bans-zoom-on-employee-laptops\"  data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/software\/video-conferencing\/355274\/google-bans-zoom-on-employee-laptops\">according to an internal email<\/a>\u00a0leaked on 8 April.<\/p>\n<p>The tech giant hasn&#8217;t specified why this decision was made, merely citing &#8220;security issues&#8221;, according to reports.<\/p>\n<h3>The FBI<\/h3>\n<p>As the coronavirus became a pandemic in March, and more of the world dived into remote working, the FBI sent out a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/security\/cyber-crime\/355171\/fbi-warns-of-zoom-bombing-hackers-amidst-coronavirus-usage-spike\"  data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/security\/cyber-crime\/355171\/fbi-warns-of-zoom-bombing-hackers-amidst-coronavirus-usage-spike\">warning<\/a> about hackers invading and disrupting video conference calls.<\/p>\n<p>Zoom was one of the companies singled out by the Bureau, which said that reports had come in from around the country of hackers hijacking\u00a0meetings and using them to spread\u00a0hate speech and pornographic images.<\/p>\n<h3>SpaceX<\/h3>\n<p>A couple of days after the FBI&#8217;s warning, reports suggested that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/security\/cyber-security\/355200\/spacex-bans-the-use-of-zoom\"  data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/security\/cyber-security\/355200\/spacex-bans-the-use-of-zoom\">Elon Musk had banned SpaceX employees<\/a> from using the software.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s currently unclear\u00a0if this ban extends to Musk&#8217;s other companies, such as Tesla. &#8216;Zoom-bombing&#8217; is thought to be the main reason for the company-wide ban.<\/p>\n<h3>The Ministry of Defence<\/h3>\n<p>The UK&#8217;s Ministry of Defence (MoD) is also said to be anti-Zoom, following reports on 27 March suggesting the agency had advised government departments against its use.<\/p>\n<p>However, it seems the message hasn&#8217;t been communicated as Prime Minister Boris Johnson recently revealed on Twitter that his cabinet has been using Zoom for meetings \u2013 with the ID of that meeting also unwittingly revealed in a photo.<\/p>\n<h3>The US Senate &amp;\u00a0Germany&#8217;s Foreign Office<\/h3>\n<p>Given that Zoom is a Chinese company,\u00a0its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/software\/video-conferencing\/355180\/zoom-does-not-use-end-to-end-encrypted\"  data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/software\/video-conferencing\/355180\/zoom-does-not-use-end-to-end-encrypted\">lack of end-to-end encryption\u00a0hasn&#8217;t gone down well in the Western world<\/a>. Like Google and SpaceX, the US Senate is said to have\u00a0told its members to avoid using\u00a0the app, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-zoom-video-commn-privacy-senate\/u-s-senate-tells-members-to-avoid-zoom-over-data-security-concerns-ft-idUSKCN21R0VU\"  data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-zoom-video-commn-privacy-senate\/u-s-senate-tells-members-to-avoid-zoom-over-data-security-concerns-ft-idUSKCN21R0VU\">according to reports on 9 April<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There are reports that the German government have placed restrictions on the software being used on\u00a0fixed-connection computers.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-germany-zoom\/german-foreign-ministry-restricts-use-of-zoom-over-security-concerns-report-idUSKBN21Q1SC\"  data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-germany-zoom\/german-foreign-ministry-restricts-use-of-zoom-over-security-concerns-report-idUSKBN21Q1SC\"><em>Reuters<\/em><\/a>, a memo to employees\u00a0said:\u00a0&#8220;Based on media reports and our own findings, we have concluded that Zoom&#8217;s software has critical weaknesses and serious security and data protection problems&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h3>Taiwan<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/software\/video-conferencing\/355257\/taiwan-first-country-to-ban-zoom-amid-security-concerns\"  data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/software\/video-conferencing\/355257\/taiwan-first-country-to-ban-zoom-amid-security-concerns\">Taiwan<\/a> is the first country to completely ban the service, blocking its public sector bodies from using it.
