Google previously warned that without approval from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/it-regulation\/31645\/fcc-admits-net-neutrality-ddos-attack-was-work-of-fiction\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/it-regulation\/31645\/fcc-admits-net-neutrality-ddos-attack-was-work-of-fiction\">FCC<\/a>, the company would likely face significantly higher prices to carry traffic by other means. The FCC will allow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/google\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/google\">Google<\/a> to operate the segment for the next six months, pending a final disposition of the license application.<\/p>\n<p>Google thanked the FCC for approving its request <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/reuters\/2020\/04\/08\/business\/08reuters-usa-trade-china-telecommunications.html\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/reuters\/2020\/04\/08\/business\/08reuters-usa-trade-china-telecommunications.html\">in a recent statement<\/a>, noting that \u201cdedicated global network deployment and operations [teams are] continually increasing capacity to meet the needs of our users, and that includes our subsea cable system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Google agreed to operate a portion of the 8,000-mile Pacific Light Cable Network System that runs between the United States and Taiwan. The company teamed up with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/facebook\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/facebook\">Facebook<\/a> to help pay for the construction of the telecommunications link, but U.S. regulators blocked its use.<\/p>\n<p>This blockage forced Google to confront regulators earlier this year, telling them it has \u201can immediate need to meet internal demand for capacity between the U.S. and Taiwan, in particular, to connect Google\u2019s Taiwan data centre to Google data centres in the United States and to serve users throughout the Asia-Pacific region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In its response to Google\u2019s statement, the Justice Department agreed that without temporary authority, \u201cGoogle would likely have to seek alternative capacity at significantly higher prices.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With this approval, Google has also agreed to diversify its interconnection points throughout Asia and will continue establishing network facilities capable of delivering traffic to its ultimate destination, the department added. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>      Sarah Brennan<\/p>\n<p>        9 Apr, 2020    <\/p>\n<p>      The Federal Communications Commission approved Google\u2019s request to use part of a U.S.-Asia undersea telecommunications cable on Wednesday, April 8.
