{"id":40051,"date":"2019-12-03T21:00:49","date_gmt":"2019-12-03T21:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/icloud.pe\/blog\/?guid=59ac14dbf5844c35cfb8948e18fe15de"},"modified":"2019-12-03T21:00:49","modified_gmt":"2019-12-03T21:00:49","slug":"verizon-unveils-5g-edge-compute-service-at-reinvent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/icloud.pe\/blog\/verizon-unveils-5g-edge-compute-service-at-reinvent\/","title":{"rendered":"Verizon unveils 5G edge compute service at Re:Invent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field-name-field-author field-type-node-reference field-label-hidden\"><br \/>\n      <span class=\"field-item even\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudpro.co.uk\/authors\/bobby-hellard\">Bobby Hellard<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n  <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"field field-name-field-published-date field-type-datetime field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\"><span class=\"date-display-single\">4 Dec, 2019<\/span><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"short-teaser\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudpro.co.uk\/\" title=\"\" class=\"combined-link\"><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body\">\n<p>AWS and Verizon have partnered to deliver\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudpro.co.uk\/leadership\/cloud-essentials\" >cloud computing<\/a>\u00a0services at the edge using 5G connectivity.<\/p>\n<p>The deal will see Amazon&#8217;s cloud processing brought closer to mobile devices at the edge thanks to Verizon&#8217;s 5G Ultra Wideband Network and AWS Wavelength.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during an AWS keynote on Tuesday, Verizon&#8217;s CEO Hans Vestberg said that his company was &#8220;the first in the world to offer 5G network edge computing&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>However, this announcement comes a week after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudpro.co.uk\/cloud-essentials\/public-cloud\/8320\/att-and-microsoft-launch-edge-computing-network\" >Microsoft and AT&amp;T<\/a>\u00a0revealed their own integrated 5G edge computing service on Azure.<\/p>\n<p>AWS and Verizon are currently piloting AWS Wavelength on Verizon&#8217;s edge compute platform, 5G Edge, in Chicago for a select group of customers, including video game publisher Bethesda Softworks and the NFL. Additional deployments are planned in other locations across the US for 2020.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve worked closely with Verizon to deliver a way for AWS customers to easily take advantage of the ubiquitous connectivity and advanced features of 5G,&#8221; said Jassy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;AWS Wavelength provides the same AWS environment \u2013 APIs, management console, and tools \u2013 that they&#8217;re using today at the edge of the 5G network. Starting with Verizon&#8217;s 5G network locations in the US, customers will be able to deploy the latency-sensitive portions of an application at the edge to provide single-digit millisecond latency to mobile and connected devices.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The aim is to enable developers to deliver a wide range of transformative, latency-sensitive use cases such as smart cars, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.co.uk\/cloud-computing\/28037\/what-is-iot#:~:targetText=by%3A%20IT%20Pro%20team,information%20to%20a%20central%20hub.\" >IoT<\/a> and augmented and virtual reality, according to AWS.
