{"id":3965,"date":"2012-10-04T14:33:00","date_gmt":"2012-10-04T14:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cloudnewsdaily.com\/?guid=e17f748c27c6083ff23c0c8c103c7bbb"},"modified":"2012-10-04T14:33:00","modified_gmt":"2012-10-04T14:33:00","slug":"mimecast-email-regulation-issues-leaving-businesses-confused","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/icloud.pe\/blog\/mimecast-email-regulation-issues-leaving-businesses-confused\/","title":{"rendered":"Mimecast: Email Regulation Issues Leaving Businesses Confused"},"content":{"rendered":"<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"org fn\">Corporate email archiving and retention policies are muddled and unclear, with many businesses leaving themselves exposed to potential litigation or compliance issues, according to new research launched today by Mimecast\u00ae, the leading supplier of cloud-based <a href=\"http:\/\/cts.businesswire.com\/ct\/CT?id=smartlink&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mimecast.com%2FWhat-we-offer%2FEmail-Archiving%2F&amp;esheet=50430079&amp;lan=en-US&amp;anchor=email+archiving&amp;index=2&amp;md5=44ec4efe682bee8eb5eb19d4fe072881\">email archiving<\/a>, security and continuity for Microsoft Exchange and Office 365. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>The research, which surveyed IT managers on their organizations\u2019 email policies and archiving practices, found that just 20 percent of businesses (23 percent globally) retain archived email for three years or more, with one in four businesses (25 percent U.S.; 26 percent globally) admitting that they do not have a clear policy on retaining email at all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key findings:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-12595\"><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"bwlistitemmargb\"><strong>Email retention policies are often ad hoc or based on guesswork \u2013 <\/strong>Just<br \/>\none in four IT departments (30 percent U.S.; 27 percent globally) IT teams<br \/>\nare \u2018completely confident\u2019 that their email policies comply with<br \/>\nall relevant regulations<\/li>\n<li class=\"bwlistitemmargb\">Forty-eight percent (46 percent globally) are \u2018mostly confident\u2019<br \/>\nwith 34 percent (23 percent globally) \u2018minimally confident\u2019 or<br \/>\n\u2018not at all confident\u2019<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"bwlistitemmargb\">Just one in four (24 percent U.S.; 27 percent globally) IT teams<br \/>\nare \u2018completely confident\u2019 that their email policies comply with<br \/>\nall relevant regulations<\/li>\n<li class=\"bwlistitemmargb\">Forty-eight percent (46 percent globally) are \u2018mostly confident\u2019<br \/>\nwith 34 percent (23 percent globally) \u2018minimally confident\u2019 or<br \/>\n\u2018not at all confident\u2019<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cTaking fifteen days to identify all relevant emails sent and received by a client is a massive and unnecessary resource drain,\u201d said Jim Darsigny, CIO, Brown Rudnick LLP. \u201cFor IT departments, managing and enforcing email policies can no longer be an ad-hoc approach as the risk potential and time wasted is too high to ignore. In our organization, the cloud enables our business to significantly reduce the pain, costs and resources normally dedicated to sourcing archived email data.
